Winch woes

My winch cable literally broke off the drum and need some advice on how to get it reconnected. The end of the cable had what looks like a brass fitting that is swaged (or something like that) on with a hole for a screw to go thru and attach it to the drum. Any help would be really appreciated. I'd rather not spend the money on a new cable (steel or synthetic rope), just get this one back on the drum again.

Thanks!

If you are using 5/16 cable - head to napa and buy a copper battery cable fitting for #1 size battery cables. Cut the fitting if it is to small a diameter for the 5/16 cable. open the cut made and slide the cable into the fitting, finally clamp it in your vise so the cable and clamp stay together. This fitting holds no load, so it does not have to be overly (i.e., welded) attached.

Use the set screw (can't remember the specs here) to attach the cable to the drum via your new cable clamp - make sure the cable has a minimum of 5 load set, tight wraps on the drum during use.

Easy peasy
