Agreed. This has happened to me a dozen times this year.

Drove 156 miles round trip to pick up some Super Swampers. Confirmed with the guy 20 minutes before I left that he had them and I was on my way with cash. Get there and find another guy loading them into his truck.

Drove 220 miles to drop off a soft top and pick up a roll cage. Take the soft top to the one guy, get money for it... go to the next stop to get the cage and the guy decided not to sell it (about 20 minutes before arriving) and was bolting it back into his Jeep.

Called about a wood steering wheel. Guy said he would meet me 25 miles away along a freeway exit at this gas station. Waited 2 hours, guy never showed. Called several times. Finally gave up and went home. Next day, guy calls and bitches me out about how he was running "a little late" and when he got there and didn't see me he turned around. Now he wants more money to try it again.

.... and the list goes.

Denis

There was someone locally he would do a scam where they sell a hot rod. People would bring cash and they would get Clubbed in the back of the head and have their money stolen. Last I heard they never caught the guy

Yeah most people dont realize if the deal sounds too good to be true, well then it probably is a SCAM. If those people smartened up about 80% of thefts on craigslist would go away. Feel bad for the guy getting clubbed but how smart was he bringing a wad of cash i am assuming going it alone...I'd have 5 friends with me if im carrying cash to buy a car.

I'll buy small value items on CL, car parts, some kids toys games anything of value NO WAY. Not worth the hassle. I actually had a HEAVY Video arcade game listed on CL last yr and some guy wanted to come to my house to look at it and i told him NO WAY, i'd send him pics and if he wanted it we could meet and i'd power it up but not at my house.

I've bought and sold too many items to count on CL (including buying and selling a lot of cars) and I've had lots of weird experiences, but one stands out beyond the rest.

I bought a motorcycle jack a few months back. A guy gives me his address and told me just to go in to the back fenced area of his condo and check it out cause he's not home. I thought it was very strange........

I peek over the fence first and the area was packed full of stuff (Hoarders style) and I see the motorcycle jack buried in there. I get the jack out and test it to make sure it works (felt weird the whole time and kept my eyes peeled). Then I call him and tell him that I want it. He tells me just to leave the $50 under the floormat and take the jack!!

It was very strange... like he was inside the condo watching me out the window and was too weird to come out of the house. I took a photo of his condo and the address and also a photo of the money under the mat... just to document it.

There's some weirdos out there for sure..... (including me for actually going on to this guy's property alone with the Make My Day Law here....) In hindsight... I won't do something like that again.

I have been burned so many times on CL..,by offering an item for sale, promising it to the first person who responded, turning down all other offers, and then watching that first guy break his promise to drop by...multiple times.

Then I switch to the next person, who I turned down politely and told I would contact them if the first sale fell through, and I get jerked around again.

I am clear now when I respond to a potential buyer. I say "yes, it's still for sale, and multiple people are interested...and the first one here with cash in hand gets it."

When I was selling my TJ I had about 15 of these replies. One of them I replied back, Why are you trying to scam me? They replied back "because I know you got money"

That reminds me of when i used to deliver pizza way back. I had a ton of strange dealings.

This one guy calls up slurring and asks for the driver (me) to deliver it to back door of his house. The dude is heavy breathing on the phone like darth vader. I'm already thinking screw that, the neighborhood is bad enough. I get to his house and ring the front door bell. Nothing. Ring it a few more times with no response, so i decide to go around back.

I hear all this moaning and yelling from the inside of the house, so i run back to my car at the front. Just as i'm getting in, the guy yanks open the front door...

...standing in crutches. he just had knee surgery and was on heavy meds. his couch was at the back door.

lol.

I lived on pizza for about a month after my last back surgery... The guys at the pizza shop knew to knock and then just open the door and put the pizza down and take their money and nice tip.
When I was finally up and able to drive down to the shop the delivery guy told me he had often thought that I was some serial killer that was gonna jump out with an axe. Lucky for him and I, that was not the case!!!
Just this week I listed a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone on CL. I had 10 emails in the first few hours. I told each and every one of them that when they said they were coming, they better show up. The first person never replied again, the second asked me to drive 60 miles to deliver it (said right in the ad that wasnt happening) and the third person showed up almost immediately and paid cash.
Its a mix of people on CL, just like anything else in life...

I was selling some rifle brass for reloading. A guy emails me saying he wants all of my rifle brass. I told him to meet me at the mall parking lot during the daytime. I waited for 45 minutes and doesn't show. I get home and he emails me saying sorry I couldn't make it to the mall, I was on my way when I realized the movie I wanted to see started in 30 minutes and wouldn't have enough time to get back before it started. He emails me the next day asking for my address and phone number. I replied meet me at the mall. He does and as I was driving home I noticed he was following me. I stopped at a home center and watched him park on the side of the building. He was staring at my jeep. I waited for 30 minutes and got into my jeep and drive around. He was still following me. I drove to a police station and he took off. Three days later I come out of my house to get the paper and there he was drinking coffee in front of my house! I told him to leave and he refused. I called the police and they arrived. He gave them an excuse that he was concerned the brass I sold him was part of a large cache of ammo and he was gathering information to give to the Feds. He tried to sell the cops that he was a super secret agent that tracks all ammo and ammo component sales to track all ammo in the U.S. my wife gets concerned every time I am even on CL.

I've sold a few things on CL and I bought my jeep from a guy I found on CL.. Overall pretty good expierences.

The spare tire that was on my jeep was a 33", I run 35's so it was useless to me. Listed it on CL for $125, got a text about 20 minutes later, met the guy in the mall parking lot, and I put it into his van for him. He was an older guy, and he gave me $140 instead of my asking price of $125. I told him he gave me too much, and he says "That's okay, you arent asking for enough, go have a beer on me." Nice guy.

Sold a VW jetta on CL a while back, and that was a huge pain in the ass. I listed every possible thing that was wrong with it, posted 7 or 8 pics, including close ups of the bad spots. I listed the price of how much it would cost for the repairs needed etc. I hated that car and was basically giving it away. It was a 2005, less than 120K, loaded with leather, heated seats etc.. I simply didn't want it anymore, so I listed it for sale at 2,500 O.B.O. It was worth around 3,500 or more. I had people texting me and offering me trades for dirt bikes, lawn mowers, etc.. I had one guy say "I'll give you $800, I'll be there to get it at 3 o'clock." Like he was giving me the deal of the century.. After about three weeks on CL, I finally sold it to a college kid for my asking price of 2,500.

When I bought my Jeep, I had two that I wanted. The one I bought was my 2nd choice. The one that I wanted was listed for 4,000. At the time, I had 3800 cash. I didn't think it was too much of a low ball to offer that, so I called him and said that I wanted it. Without even seeing it in person first. I asked him what his bottom dollar was, and he promptly said "First 3000 takes it". I said I'd be there within the hour, he said "ok, it's yours"... I got his address, typed it into the gps and hit the road. About 20 minutes from his place, I called him, like he asked me to.. He didn't even say "hello" he answered the phone by saying "It's gone".. I was pissed.. So I called my second choice guy, met him at the gas station, and gave him $2200.. Granted it was in a little worse condition that the one I really wanted, but then again, if I would have bought the first one, I wouldn't have gotten to expierence working on my Jeep, and making it the way I want it..

Worked Out in the End

I was looking for a cheap vehicle to tow behind my RV. This was shortly before I purchased my TJ. I came across a decent looking 96 Geo Tracker 4x4 and the guy has it listed for $2500. It looks decent in the pictures but its a 2 and a half hour drive away. I know Tracker but they do make great RV tow behinds.

So, I call the guy up and ask him some questions about it. He tells me that he just rebuilt the engine with a new clutch etc. I explain to him that Im coming from quite a distance and that Ill be driving the vehicle back with me. Is it good to go?!?! He assures me that the vehicle is good to go. I offer $2K if it is as good as he says. He accepts and I take the day off work the next day, get the money and drive up there.

Im about a half hour out and he calls me to tell me that he just found out it has a slight oil leak. Well Im not happy but Im almost there. I get there and it looks okay. Im thinking okay this might still work. In speaking to the dude I find out that he did not rebuild the motor it has a new junkyard motor in it. I had previously asked him about a couple of problem areas that are common with these vehicles. He indicated to me on the phone that he had addressed those issues. Find out now that he has no idea what I am talking about. But he has removed the thermostat. He apparently does not know that they need to achieve 180 degrees to run properly.

So, anyway I take it for a little ride. And now it is obvious that it also has a not insignificant exhaust leak. I get back from the test ride and oil is just pouring from what looks like the front main seal. I politely thanked the guy for his time and my wife and I went and had lunch.

That dude was clearly not trust-able. But it worked out in the end for me. I found my 2001 Yellow TJ a month or so later also on CL (right down the road from my house). Probably paid a little more than I should have for the Jeep but it is immaculate in condition and came with only 31XXX miles on the clock. It tows great behind my RV and I enjoy playing in the dirt with it and driving it to work.

Crazy people out there. Great stories though!

Last night I had a guy email me maybe 15 times with various items of trade for a CB I own that I have for sale. A watch, a chainsaw blah blah. Told him I will trade him for cash only

I even knocked $15 bucks off the price if he came to get it soon. He can afford $90 but can't afford $110.00.

I live in Vegas and ABSOLUTELY never deal from home. Big scam pf guys coming to look at "whatever", passing on the deal, when they're actually just casing the place to come rob you later.

I meet everybody at a shopping center by my house.

He tried to sell the cops that he was a super secret agent that tracks all ammo and ammo component sales to track all ammo in the U.S. my wife gets concerned every time I am even on CL.

CL usually goes good for me. I picked up a set of nearly new rubicon rails for $150 last night after contacting the seller about 4 hours prior. I also sell a lot of bigger things on there that are too big or awkward to ship on e-bay.

Another reason why I would rather buy new or just not use CL..

I had a kid come buy my hard top with his mom. Came straight away, dropped the cash counting out each bill in my hand and then wanted me to install it. I could tell he had no idea what he was doing and the mom didn't either. Needless to say, I was young once and remember working hard for things I wanted (still do). And I"m a sucker with a big soft spot. So, as they are standing in my driveway shivering, I end up pulling his Jeep into my garage, and removing his soft top and installing the hard top. Not a bad experience necessarily but just one of those things that I can relate to not having the full story when we made the deal on the phone and something coming up at the last minute!

In my ad, I just wanted the top gone, he was first on the phone and I had a few back ups. I figured someone would pull up with a truck and I'd help him hoist it and off he'd go. Oh well, CL is still my favorite way to move stuff quickly for cash.

I've done plenty of business on CL, mostly buying and selling cars/motorcycles and parts. Always meet in a crowded area, daytime, and bring cash if you're buying.

Most sellers won't disclose everything wrong with their vehicle for sale, but if it seems like they are excessive in their lies then I just walk away. You'll almost always have a few minor repairs to make so consider that when offering a price.

The few times they've tried to scam me I read right through them... a little common sense goes a long way when doing business with strangers.

If I'm not mistaken, there is actually a movie about a craigslist killer, isn't there?
