Worst Craigslist experiences.

Lets hear everyones worst CL experiences. I will go first.

Ok, so i found some BFG mud terrains on there the exact size I was looking for and they were in the same town as me. (which is rare because i live in a small town). So I texted the guy, like the ad said to do. Then he said "the tires are still available, but im in maine hunting for the rest of the week. So i just told him to keep me in mind and that i had cash ready to pick up the tires for his asking price of $400 (they were 33x10.5x15 with 85% tread left). So he said he would save my number and get back to me the following week. Well, that never happened. So 2 weeks later i texted him and still nothing back. Then just yesterday, a total of 3 weeks later, he texted me and said "do you still want the tires" i said, "let me just be sure that 15" rims will fit on my jk." So then i texted him and asked when i could come pick the up. and he said "sorry, sold them last night". The nerve of some a**holes. If he would have texted me right away the first time, i could have found the rims i wanted and been off with the tires. but nope. not my time.

Back in 2003 (from the WantAd up here in Massachusetts) some guy listed a 2 year old YZ125 for dirt cheap. I called him and told him I was on my way, he said "OK." I am in his neighborhood looking for his house (this was before GPS) and I get him on the phone and he said he sold it.

I think he figured it was asking way too little for it. I was with my buddy at the time and we were PIST for driving an hour for no reason. We would have gone into roid rage on that dickhead but we never ended up finding his place. A crime would have been committed.

A few months ago, after extensive searching for a jeep, I was ready and on my way to buy a 94 yj. This yj had all the bells and whistles, any and everything you could do to a jeep was done. I even test drove it once. I asked the seller to give me a week to get the funds together and he said that's fine. He was asking 10,000 and I thought it was an appropriate price. On my way to get it ( hour and a half drive) I call to confirm the plans and he tells me it was sold 10 mins prior. I couldn't have been any more livid than I was. I ended up cussing the guy out and hanging up.

That is definitly top 10 on worst craigslist. But honestly, if that is your rig in your avatar, it looks like everything worked out very well in the end. Nice ride.

That does suck Tex, but I remember selling a motorcyle online, and if I had a dollar for everyone that said they'd 'be back', or were 'on their way', I could have given the damn thing away. I sold it to the first person with cash in hand, and don't think I ever heard back from anyone else.

Sure it sucks to miss a good deal, but put yourself in the seller's situation:

You have something you want sold ASAP. You have people call and ask you to hold, or someone comes by to look and says they'll be back (no deposit to hold the item)...
then a guy shows up with cash in hand... what are you going to do?

If someone asks me to hold an item without offering a deposit that represents a commitment to buy, I always tell them that the first person with the cash gets the item...

I will, and have. If someone is on they way to my house I would not consider selling it to anyone else. That's a major d-bag move right there.

As the seller, I would have asked for a non-refundable deposit with a finite time limit. I'd wait the agreed time, and if no show, sell it to the first person with the cash.

Haha I appreciate all the sentiment! I'm Over the whole situation obviously. I'm very happy with my 04 tj! I think what makes me the happiest about it is I get to build mine up. It would have saved lots of time and money to buy the yj already done up. But, honestly, where's the fun in that?!

Everyone is right about the seller. I should have given him a deposit. But he still should have kept his word. Oh we'll, I'll let bygones be bygones.

Where do I begin?

From a seller's perspective: No shows, unrealistic expectations, "I'll take that free item but you have to deliver it", tire kickers, people who show up with a dozen of their friends to pick up a 5 pound item, people who want you to load the item for them (or put it in a place it's not supposed to fit, like a sectional couch in a Honda Civic), people wanting to barter (after you've already made a cash deal), people who show up with no money (or less money than needed), people who need change (I'm not a friggin store!) or people who show up and then bitch the whole time that your item (despite a dozen pictures) isn't "as described".

From a buyer's perspective: Drive 200 miles to find your interpretation isn't the same as the sellers, get there and realize the item is already sold, get there and be told they won't sell you the item even if they have it, get to a place to find it doesn't exist, end up in a sketchy place (and had to talk my way out of it), get there to find the item isn't what was pictured (less quality, different version), etc.

I've done probably 500 dealings on CL over the years. Some go off without a hitch.. but most of the time there's at least some problem which makes it a hassle.

Yup most of the time there is an issue. I sold an Escort 9500ix last year. It was on CL for like $380 and some Russian guy shows up driving an X5 and wearing a Tag Huer. He said he only brought $200. I told him to go to the bank and come back. Needless to say he was pist and did not get my detector. He was coming from a crummy part north of Boston. He was one of those guys that wanted to look like he had money. Total dick.

I am dealing with someone now on CL who is selling a CB that can barely put together a sentence over email.

It's the price you pay for "convenience."

sold my dakota last march. had it on craigslist and had very detailed pictures showing every inch if the truck. my description stated every little detail I could think of.

guy came and looked at it, said he loved it and it was perfect. told me he would be there the next day with cash. came next day with a friend, looked over the truck a last time and noticed a crack in the windshield. I didn't notice the crack before since it was in the shaded part of the window on the passenger side. guy goes off my me as if I was trying to beat him. told him I'm sorry but I never knew the crack was there. offered to take 200 off the deal. guy storms off without saying a word.

updated my ad to show the cracked windshield. few days later, another person shows up and buys the truck. took down ad.

previous guy shows up next day and gives me crap about selling the truck. never calls, just shows up. tell him one last time that there was no deposit and I thought he wasnt interested. I go inside. guys friend punches my mailbox off the post. they leave. I call cops. cops arrest them 10 minutes later. guy had warrants. goes to jail.

by far my most memorable craigslist experience.

I had a chicken tractor (rolling chicken pen) that I sold for $50. Only after we got it loaded into his truck he told me he only brought $40. I dragged it out of his truck and told him to get off my property. He laughed and told he just found another $10. I told him he has been given notice so there would be no warning shot.

On the flip side, I sold a 22' deck boat via craigs list. I was in central Texas, the buyer was from San Diego. He flew to Texas one-way, rented a U-Haul truck to tow it, and we went to a branch of his bank and had them make out a cashiers check. That deal took a whole bunch of talking before I agreed. The guy never even started the outboard. Sent me pictures of him and his son using once he got home..

Like has already been said .... CL has it's good and bad .....

My rules:

Bring the money.

Don't even ASK me to "hold it".

First on the scene with the funds takes it home.

I WILL wait on you if you call and give me a time you'll arrive. But don't be 30 minutes late or it's gone to the fellow standing there with the funds.

If I say it's FIRM ...it's FIRM.

And most of all: If you can't act like an adult ... don't even bother calling me.

I've done well on CL, but it's a royal pain most of the time. Lots of tire kickers, bargain hunters, and low-ballers.

It's always hit or miss for me with Craigslist. When my daughter was born, I had to sell my last tj. Some guy called and started asking me all these questions about the mods, then finally asked how much would it cost to turn the jeep back to stock. I immediately told him it was no longer for sale. I ended up selling to a guy who had just sold his wrangler, only to realize how much he missed jeeps. It went to a good home at least.

That's how I feel about the last Miata I sold. Loved that car. When I needed a truck instead, I was hesitant to sell but I went through a parade of "I don't like the color" and "why are the wheels so wide" and "can you remove the rollbar for me?" before I found someone like me... a guy who wanted to run SCCA in it and use it as his daily driver. I gave him a bargain and I still see him driving it once in a while (it sticks out) so I'm glad it's gone to a good home.

When my wife and I first got together she had her mind set on an Acura TL. We checked with some dealerships and they were just a little out of her price range, so we checked CL. We found one about 2 hours drive away and made the trip to check it out.
It was pristine, and mechanically very clean. We agreed on a price and asked the seller to follow us to our bank so we could draw the cash out. He agreed, we went to the bank and pulled out the cash. It was at this time that I saw the title for the first time and JUST BEFORE my wife handed him $21,000 in cash I asked to see the title. It was FAKE.... Completely counterfeit and not even particularly a good one. I showed it to one of the auto finance people at the bank branch we were at and he agreed it was absolutely fake.
When we returned to the lobby, the seller and the car were gone. A call to LAPD and they went to his house and found three stolen cars on his property.
We wasted an entire day, but saved ourselves ALOT of money... We decided to pay a little more and get one from the dealership!

I bought my 2007 JKU from Craigslist this summer. I had the best experience. No BS from the seller. No games. Worked out great. Loving the Jeep life.

I would of sold the jeep too. I have had lots of people that tell me that they will be back to get it later and I never hear from them. Its a different story if you left a deposit.

Bought my Jeep on CL, no problems at all. Even got it for 100$ less, but I don't consider a 95% first offer a "lowball".
Bought my bumper on CL, no issues.

Sold my truck on CL, I did hold it for the guy because he wanted to give me a check. No way. He had half the cash, I told him to leave that, the truck, and the title with me. He can have a sales contract valid for 2 days (it was sunday), then he gets his money and the truck goes back for sale. He was there the next day.

Sold another truck on CL, no issues.

Bought both those trucks from CL, no issues.

Sold my car on CL, 2 Indian fellers show up from NC (at least 3 hours out) who are twice my size, and try to "talk" me down on price. Not gonna happen (I used to repo folks in Atlanta). Finally the "other" guy pulls the rest of the money out of his pocket. Then they go pull a dealer tag out of their car and slap it on mine. Really wierd encounter, but I got what I wanted.

Then there was that time I got an HJ for my coffee table... BaaHaHa, j/k. But you can! BaaHaHa.

I've had a few doozy experiences on CL, I post and buy personally and I also handle posting and filtering all the dealership car ads.. We always get obvious scams, like this one:

Reply to ad: "still in good condition?"

My immediate reply: "Absolutely! Were you interested in scheduling a test drive?"

Their reply: "I am comfortable with the item as advertise, I am out of the country right now and the item is for my nephew, so here's how we do this. I will send payment for the item plus an additional $250 to cover shipping expenses and for your trouble. Please forward me this information to expedite your payment:

Name:
Address:
City:
State:
Bank name:
Bank address:
Routing number:

Please do not take advantage of me as I am a God fearing man and would never fraud or take advantage of anyone myself. I am expecting an honest transaction and would never take advantage of a brother in Christ."

lol, it'd be funny if I wasn't obligated to reply! lol

This thread is a better idea then I thought. It's nice that i know when i get home from work, I will have reading material. And to those who were saying that you take the first cash offer. I agree completely. But when you stand there and tell the seller that you have the cash in hand and ready to pick it up, and they still sell it....that's just a douche move. Excuse my language.

I agree with you up to a point. When a set of bfg mud terrains is going to run you 1k. Or around there, and you see an ad for 90% tread left at 400 dollars, it's hard to pass that up. sometimes, the deal is worth the hassle.

Talked to a guy about a truck told him I was on the road with cash 3 hours away. Was a beautiful truck. About 10 min before getting to his house I see a similar truck on the road and got excited because that was the truck I had been looking for and envisioned myself in it. 10 min later I found out that was the truck I drove 3 hours for. The guy took 300 less than what I had in hand and sold it 15 min before I arrived. No call no text! That was a bad day.

I'd call that a bad day, however, I would have sold the truck too, I've bought and sold alot of things on craigslist and there are a lot of deadbeats out there that say "i'm on my way and have cash" and never show. Or ones that say "I'm on my way and have cash" and dont actualy have the cash when they get there. This is obviously not you, but the bottom line is first cash in hand will almost always get the sale.
