Wrangler vs. G-wagen

Hey, just out of curiosity, was wondering what folks think of the MB G-wagen versus a well-modified Wrangler. Got a buddy from college with a G500 that was modified a bit and he gets together with other G-wagen owners for offroading like the Jeepers do. Seems hard to imagine taking a $90k MB out over rocks but I guess they do and they seem to like them. Wasn't sure if anybody's been out with them and how they compare with a nice Wrangler.

I don't know how it would compare, but plenty of people like to offroad vehicles that cost a lot. To me, it's a lot of money to take a wrangler off road and beat the crap out of it, but it's all perspective. At least if your buddy gets stuck, it should be luxurious. LOL

They are bred from military vehicles the same as wranglers. They are very capable and if you look at the euro only ones they are even more similar to wranglers. Specially the Cabriolet with the removeable top. The price tag is deffinitly higher, but if Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercury, or Buick designed the interior and you squeezed a supercharged 8v from the factory under the hood im sure the prices would be compareable.
Mercedes-Benz Deutschland - G-Klasse - G-Klasse Cabriolet

I really hate using the American "luxury" brands in the example, because compared to european luxury brands their interiors are cheap and crappy.

G class started out as a mostly utilitarian military vehicle that came out in 1979 and are very tough and rugged.

i also love the last G55 AMG, which i think were over $100k

He can come follow me any day of the week. I'll wheel with anyone. But for the taking a $90k rig on the trails yeah is a bunch of money but I know a few guys with more than that into "jeeps"

its very tough and not fair to compare modified vs. stock vehicles, regardless of the cost. IMHO

The modern ones are silly, who wants to risk scratching one? Now the grey-market ones from the 80s? I'd wheel the hell out of one. Almost bought one in college, actually.

Don't you think anyone who wheels a g-wagon views scratches and such the same as us jeepers? I mean people take brand new JKs out on the trail with shiny new paint jobs fresh from the factory.

It all depends. G-Wagen scores high among serious expedition users.

If all you need is a weekend toy and you don't venture further than one cell phone call to the local tow truck company, then Jeep is OK. If you're going to cross Congo rain forest or Australian outback, or Argentinian pampas (and your life depends on your vehicle's reliability), than G-Wagen and Land Cruiser are the vehicles of choice.

Why don't you start a thread-poll about how many of us Jeepers, are planning on a Congo Forrest/Australian outback/ Argentinian pampas trip in the next-oh 5 years and the shipping/insurance/spare backup assurance-is available-

I just can't wait for your summary !

What exactley makes the G wagon any better as a expedition vehicle vs. a wrangler as a expedition vehicle? Not doubting the G wagon, but if your gonna make a statement like that you need to back it up with some reasons as to why.
I think my JKU Rubicon would be just as good or better in a expedition trip than a Gay Wagon

For the mear cost of 106-125k (2011) I hope the G Wagon has something going for it.. Perhaps it's that wopping 11-15mpg. But seriously take a stock JKU Rubicon (2011) and half of the cost difference between the two vehlicles to spend on extras to build it specific to being a expedition vehlicle your gonna blow away that gay wagon in capability as a Expedition Vehlicle.. Oh and I say all this giving the G Wagon the benifet of the doubt as a born to run expedition vehlicle, but IMO give the stock JKU Rubi and bigger gas tank and it's already ahead of the mercedez for way less then half the cost..

not to put down my/our wrangler/jk's, but to make one observation, when was the last time a wrangler of any series was used in the military, which is some of the most extreme usage there is. I believe that mercedes still makes a g-wagen that is of military spec and deployed in some places, that are not the 90-125k variety. I am only guessing that by the time you take out the import taxes, overseas shipping, all the luxury stuff that they are half the price in military spec in europe.

When was the last time I saw a wrangler being used by a military? Well I saw a few of them on the news some weeks back when that egyptian riot thing was going on as Egypt uses the J8 Wrangler for there military. I'm sure a few other countries are using it as well..

i had never seen a J8 till i just looked it up, after your post. I also looked up the current G-class on wikipedia. the G is still in current production and still being used by more than a few miitaries around the globe. The article said that the GAF(German Armed Forces) have had over 50 differenct variants delivered over the years.

Just as an aside the G is/was assembled by Daimler-Steyr-Puch, which also just happen to build another awesome off road machine the Pinzgauer.

Sometimes I wonder why were not subjected to all the cool toys that europe is. Not saying we be interested in them, but to not even have them offered.. Probably a emissions thing or something like that.. Lots of cool cars/suvs/trucks that just never are seen or allowed to be available in the u.s.. Even if in the case of some jeeps that are made here but only sold in europe
