Xterra or Liberty as a second vehicle

I did a little searching and only found a few random comments so I thought I would post the question. Should I stay true to the Jeep name and get the Liberty or go with the something else? I need to replace my DD ( I'm keeping the JK of course) and From what I understand the '02 Liberty is the one to have because of the Tranny and either the sport or limited editions of the Xterra. I want something 3-4 years and older.

Well you're definitely correct on the transmission, my sister has an 03 with the 42RLE and it's had transmission work done under warranty 2 or 3 times (hurray to the previous owner for buying an extended warranty). Super excited to have the same POS in my Jeep...

Now other than that it's been a pretty reliable vehicle, but damn the transmission is bad.

My wife bought an '03 Liberty about a year and a half ago and loves it. My sister has an '06. I like them both better than the '05 Xterra a friend used to have.

aren't the xterras a little bigger? i mean more like the size of a grand cherokee? as happy as i have been with my wrangler i'd probably stay with jeep for every future vehicle.

My wife has a '11 nitro, I guess its a little longer than a 02-03 but the newer liberty's are the same thing. We like it and the power doesn't seem to bad with the 3.7l.

Thanks everyone, I'm like you 6inarow, If it were just up to me I'd have a lot full of jeeps. We are heavily leaning toward the Liberty, I'd LOVE to get an unlimited but we are on a budget and its probably (unless I get my hands on it ) just gonna be the grocery getter. What I couldn't do with an early model liberty though.

Why not get something you can tow the Jeep with?

my friend had an xterra. I like them, dang thing lasted 10 years AFTER being totalled and rebuilt. It got some oil leak he couldn't pay for but it still ran fine otherwise. beast of a car. I'd go with that or a cherokee. All the other jeeps seem EH (not wrangler obviously)

Hmmm, very tempting but I need something for my wife to drive to work every day, and I don't think she's ready for the dodge duelly turbo diesel that's on my wish list. great idea though.

I don't know about the Xterra but the 2005 Frontier I have (145,000 miles) has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. Absolutely no trouble anywhere and I've put it in places that only 4x4's go (I have never babied it). The body of my Frontier has dents and scratches but the running gear is perfect. My son was a tech for Nissan and the engine-tranny-diff are bulletproof. I looked at the X-terra but I'm in the other predicament, I'm looking at the Jeep Wrangler for a serious 4x4. Not putting the Xterra down but looking at the Wrangler the 4x4 quality (Dana axle etc) is obvious.

My wife had on '02 xterra and loved it. it was pretty reliable and never gave her any issues. We traded it in in '08 for a yukon and it held its value, got $6k from the dealer.

I vote for the Xterra. Or go for the Nissan Frontier 4door. Basically a Xterra with a pick up bed. I like....

I like this truck alot.. solid mid size truck that can handle mild to light ended moderate trails with success. Might as well put a vote in for my favorite IFS vehlicle though.. The Jeep XK.. Hemi Option.. Tons of grocery space so to speak.. Great all aroundd vehlicle.. Sad that it still isn't around.. Would have been siiick if Jeep went SFA with it
