i understand where your friends are coming from. i once had a car and my friend had the exact same one. i would rip on him for having a different color. ie "black is the heaviest color so it's slower." we both knew it was funny and just what car buddies tend to do. i probably would tease and joke with both of you if i was there and expect the same in return. a different friend now has that car i used to own and i give him crap about it even though it used to be mine. just saying it doesn't really matter which one is better because it's going to happen between friends no matter what.

I regularly wheel with my buddy that owns a 4 runner, we give each other crap all the time and I will admit he is a better driver than me but that is because he is more patient than me. But if you go the vids and pics of us wheeling he has to pull cable just as much am me. Only difference in his stuck and mine is his usually comes right out and mine is normally a 20-30 minute recovery. I tell him he should have bought a jeep, he tells me i should have bought a yota.

a good friend of mine tows his XJ with an Xterra Off road. Factory locker and a very well built V6 makes a great tow rig and lighter wheeler. can they go run hammers no. but they are great DD/weekend wheelers.

a friend of mine drove his X from Vermont to Moab with all his camping gear wheeled for 4 days then drove home 0 issues

they are great guys to wheel with. if you are Jeep or nothing you lose out on a lot of wheeling friends and information on builds

^totally agree with your point. My friend rebuilt a Toyota Land Cruiser that turned out pretty sick. He just likes building stuff, and is super handy. So whenever I have a project, I know I can ask him for help and he will no doubt have some great info for me and be willing to pitch in a hand. Does he own a Jeep? No, but he's a great resource and likes to go off roading anyway.

I dont really mind Xterra's, my buddies got one and the thing has some balls, what concerns me is your friend talking crap bout Jeeps. The X has capabilities (I have wheeled in it and performs almost as well as my virtually stock Wrangler little 4 banger.) The thing is, his X is manual, making off roading better. If it were automatic, the thing would be a piece of shit, any Xterra that is automatic and has no mods to it is crap for off roading.

I go with Jeep guys and Toyota guys. I'm sure I'll run with some Nissan guys soon. The one thing I have learned is this- different types of vehicles and people are what make it a great experience. I never make fun of people who want to wheel, regardless of vehicle. I have seen some fantastic Tacomas, Hiluxes, Landcruisers, Range Rovers, and 4Runners (I'm sure Nissans will come soon enough) set up for off-roading and have met some cool and interesting people, who drive really well too.

If I had a smack-talking friend with street tires who kept getting stuck, it would make for some fun posts though.

A lot of small SUVs can be set up to offroad effectively. What separates them is the amount of work needed to get them to do what you want them to do. I think the previous posters X that was taken to moab was awsome. Another vehicle that looks crazy when built is the liberty.

The guys I wheel with have a tradition.. You need to get pulled out (not an easy stuck on a rock pull but a serious recovery operation) costs you a signature. You have to sign the recovery Jeep with what was pulled out. It's always done neatly like the old aircraft kill flags. So next time he talks shit you just have to point to his signature on your jeep with 3 or 4 tick marks on it.
Unless your in a hummer.. Then it costs an emblem and a sig

Wasn't sure where to post this but my buddy has an olive green Toyota FJ.
First thing out of his mouth upon seeing it told me that a stock FJ will do the Rubicon trail but a stock Rubicon will not. I'm new to Jeeps and tried googling this subject matter and got nothing definitive.

You think your friend talking crap about your jeep saying its not better than an xterra is bad? Try your mom talking about her soon to be LR2 being more capable than your jeep..

Does anybody know if it is true that a stock Wrangler Rubicon can't actually do the Rubicon trail?

Yes a stock rubi could make it but I'm sure it would have some body damaged.. They ran a stock 2012 grand Cherokee through the Rubicon trail, it made it but was missing the bumpers and the rockers were trashed

We ran it in the winter of 04' in my dads stock rubi, it sat on the bumpers a few times but there was no major damage. It just takes a skilled driver and a loooot of patience

4wheeler ran the JK and JKU Rubicon through the Rubicon in 2007 and 2012.. No issues.. Does take a good driver though.. That being said, Jeeps have been running the Rubicon for decades well before any Rubicon edition Jeep every was thought of.
