yj to tj gear swap

i probably just overlooked someone elses post..
but i have an 89yj with a 4 cyl 5speed that ive parted out and i was wondering if the carriers and gears would swap from the yj into my 97tj they are both d30/35s im not too worried about setting up pinion depth and backlash i can do that but
i was just wondering if they interchange between the two..
my tj has the sissy 3.07s and is a dog with my 31x12.5thornbirds but yj has the 4.1s and im sure this would pep it up a bit

The carriers interchange, the rear gearsets are the same, the front gearsets are not. Replacement numbers indicate the yj used reverse cut gears in the front axle. This would be consistent with the xj.

My suggestion would be use the carriers from the yj in the tj. The carriers for 4.10 gears and 3.07 gears are different. Get new aftermarket gears for both the front and rear of the tj.You will need new gears in the front anyway and it is very iffy moving gears from one axle to another. Bad tooth contact pattern usually results in broken teeth and it is not worth taking a chance on your primary axle.

Good luck with it

Whoops! Wasn't watching years close enough, front carrier will only work from 91 up, sorry. Probably cheaper to get front axle from 4 cyl tj than to rebuild yours. As far as I know they are all 4.10.
