how do I quote one sentence of a long post?

I'm technologically challenged. If I just want to quote one or two sentences of a long post I'm having trouble. I've tried highlighting just the part I want to quote before clicking quote and Ive tried it down in the reply box after I click quote. Sometimes it works but doesn't come up in the dark quote box. I hope I was clear. Thanks

I click on quote, which copies the whole thing. Then I delete the bits I don't want.

Alternatively, you could copy a line from the post, then paste it into your reply.
Then, highlight that text, adn click on the little speech balloon icon. That will pput it in the quote box, but it won't have the person's name.

And you have to highlight and copy the QUOTE thing in the [ ] things at the beginning and/or end of what you cut so it ends up in the darker box things. I think.

That should clear it up.

Oh, and then paste the things in the [ ] things where you want them at the end of the quotes.

That makes sense because I have deleted bits and sometimes the quote will be up there but it won't be in the dark box ?

Cut and paste is where it's at. Just like kindergarten.

Okay, now for your test Pokey. Cut and paste every other word in this post as a separate quote.

You have 5 minutes.

If the box just won't appear right, check the tag (the text between the [ and ]) at the beginning of the quote and that the end of the quoted text is
; note the slash character inside the brackets.

The opening tag should appear as "
" where the xxxxx is the name of the member being quoted and the yyyyy is the post number (it isn't required but if it's left off you won't have the blue > that will take you straight to the original post). The slash character inside the brackets at the end denote that it is an end tag.

If you click on the quote button you can readily see what I mean. The problem arises when someone cuts out text and catches one of the required characters from the tags.

Exactly.

Didn't I say that. Kinda?

Maybe not.
