Question '08 JK 3.8L What to expect ???

Now that the 4.0 is gone, what can one expect with the new/old 3.8L minivan engine in the new wrangler X's? I had one in my minivan and it was a hot engine, great acceleration, tempermental tranny at higher mileage. CD explicitly stated that you must use MOPAR ATF fluid when changing tranny oil and you better stick to that one or you will definiteley have problems. Any comments ???

The low end torque is weak, you'll have to rev the dickens out of it to get adequate power to pull a grade.

I could be mistaken, but here's really no HP difference between the 4.0 jeep & the 3.8. Haven't yet changed the tranny fluid, so I can't help you there...

I traded a 1998 Chevy Step-sidew/ 350 for 2008 Jeep Wrangler 3.8 so it was quite a drop in HP .
But as long as I keep the rpm @2800-3200 it does pretty good.

Fortunatly there are a few things you can do to squeeze a little more power out of it for not a lot of money.

Plleeease tell us more! mine is a real dog on hills,(auto') I never use the overdrive on hills, have no problem with the take off thinkin' the 410 AR is the reason? I know I can chip it, do the exhaust & also the air intake, but these things aren't cheap, I just always seem to be sinking more money into it.

I second the 6 speed comment. If you get it up around 3 grand it will haul butt. Low end torque is "decent". Course I'm still running stock tires.

i added a purejeep intake and had a custom exhaust made at a local exhaust place and noticed a bit of power difference. i fit does have the same hp and torque as the 4.0 it must be at 8k rpm.
