The wide stance comes from the wheel offset more than the wheel width. To provide proper suspension clearance we typically use wheels with an offset between 5.2 and 4.5. Many of the 15" wheels are 3.75 and they have more "stance". If you want to look wide, put a 12.5 wide tire on a wheel with offset between 3 and 4 inches. The less offset the farther they stick out.
The negatives are the amount you have to reduce your backspacing to avoid interference, it is too wide (by manufacturer spec) for many 33 and 35 tires; this can lead to loosing a bead when airing down and a valley in tread in extreme cases.
Back in the 60's we had a lot of Jeeps running around with 10" wide rims...Just blew out the tires a little and they looked pretty cool. Worked great in the Sand....worked ok in the mud if you were careful, if not, ya spun the tarz off the beads. Except for Terra-Tires, we didn't have the choices of big wide fat tires back then....Most Jeeps ran 9.00X 16's, all ya needed in the mud or trails in the Coast Range.
Some even had 12 " wide rims and ran Terra Tires...
Toooo baddd, those days are gone I guess..... "BH"
