2007 soft top on a 2012, having some problems

So I picked up a 2007 top for my 2012. It was really cheap due to a damaged rear drivers side surround (I'm talking double digits cheap) but included all the hardware, windows, etc. and overall seems in decent shape considering its age. I got it mounted up today after cleaning it yesterday and am having a few problems.

First is when I fold it down it seems like I'm not folding it correctly. As you can see in the second pic the fabric is resting on the roll bar and it seems like it should slide down a little farther but won't. If I pull that fold out, that sort of fixes it but then it's not folded right and looks like it stresses the pieces that snap into the channels over the doors. Am I doing something wrong? I followed the instructions in a 2007 manual for the top and made the W with the sunrider then slid the whole thing back and down.

The next problem is after getting all the windows in etc. and finally as a last step locking down the header latches I took it for a test drive. As soon as I hit 20mph+ I get horrible wind noise. The 2nd to last pic is a shot of how it's sitting at the windshield. Seems like it's sitting a little back from the front of the windshield seal and also there's a gap. I know about the footman loop issue with 2009+ (there was definitely a large gap in the middle when I test fit it first) and as you can see in the last pic I modified the plastic with my dremel to clear it. The spiderwebshade bungee doesn't seem to be a problem because I pulled down on it to make sure it wasn't forcing the header up and no wind noise change.

When I got the top there were some seals at the corners that were worn. Here's a pic of them. I did replace them. The kit was listed as for 11-12, MOPAR 68078452AA - MOPARĀ® Soft Top Foam Tape Seal Kit for 11-12 JeepĀ® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec but the long thin strips looked like un-smashed versions of what was already on the top. I did not use the other two pieces.

Here's the rest of the pics as referenced........

It's so hard to diagnose soft top issues not in front of you. Your folds look way better then mine lol It should sit down on the tub, yours is not. There is a obvious gap there and should pull down flat.
Again .. Not really sure what the heck is going on in the front either.
I wonder if there's any difference with the header itself ? As far as I know the only fitment difference is the center loop position. All others cosmetic and design (operation)

On the front problem I did manage to find some references to a TSB about replacing a plastic "plate" in the header with a new metal one on the 07's and maybe 08's (I think 09 and above have it already) to fix wind noise. Not sure about a gap like this though. For what I paid for the top and the condition it's in though I don't plan on paying the $150 for a header replacement and would instead dump that into finding a newer top on CL.

I literally paid $50 for this top with all the parts and $10 plus shipping for that foam kit. The rear driver surround has the tab where the front overlaps it broken off but there's enough that the front surround holds it down anyway. The guy sold it for $50 vs. 200 because he didn't want to bother ordering a new surround first.

If I can fix these couple issues though the top should last for a year or two easy for some summer heat protection on those 100 degree days though or..........hopefully............the occasional spring/early summer rain shower. At least I'm not out very much $$$ if I end up just dumping it in the trash and starting over.

The only other thing I can think of is the 1st bow just behind the front seats was loose (not attached to the top) when I got it. There was a long row of velcro that looked like it should be wrapped around the bow though so I put it in there. I'm assuming this is correct? You can see what I'm talking about in this pic..

I just got a free 08 top and my front looks a lot like yours, and I have much leakage. I just ordered the replacement metal headder and will report back on how well it works. P.S. I had to dremmel out the headder for mine to fit too.

The top bows are supposed to rotate back and be almost parallel to the rear sport bar. This should lower your top. Folks have already recommended the header replacement.

Not sure what you're talking about here?

Got another picture of the header this morning. You can see how it's nice and tight on the driver's corner and pops up in the middle. I'm 99.999% sure I removed enough of the header with the dremel but I'll double check to be sure.

Looks like it's hitting something in the middle. That, or the header is warped.

When you fold the top back down, are you folding it into the sunrider position first before lowering the whole thing?

I'm starting to suspect it's warped, but I'm going to try and re-seat it at lunch today. It was getting dark last night by the time I finally was closing it up so it's possibly I either messed up, or didn't grind as much of the header as was needed to clear my center loop.

Yep definitely did that.

I had the same issue with the folds at first. I think your first fold is too far from the header. There's a point just past the header that seems like a natural fold on mine. Once you get that one, the rest does just kinda "W" from there and it will sit like it should. I always have to adjust my folds once the top is sitting down over the cargo area because it usually starts out looking like your picture.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

Got a chance to look at it in better light at lunch. So I'm thinking the header is warped. It's definitely not hitting anything and I even tried some downward pressure while latching the front latches. What I can't figure out is if it's actually sealing (won't be able to hit with water for a few days) or if it's just because the top is popped up a bit that the change in airflow is making the noise. If it's not sealing well, I can probably get some weather stripping at home depot and maybe fix it I'm guessing? Of course if it's just the top is messing with the airflow then I'm out of luck there I guess.

Ok, I finally got around to "making" some velcro straps to hold the top down...........since this was off an 07 and I'm the 3rd owner from what I understand, it didn't come with any by the time it got to me. Just want to double check that I have it folded correctly this time. The frame is definitely sitting much more like how the manual says it should.

If the plastic pin on the door surround is broken off you might try using a sheetrock screw and then reforming the pin around the sheetrock screw with a hard epoxy like the one they sell at the Home Depot that when mixed is gray. Once you get the pin reformed, you can fine tune it with a dremel tool.

Nope, no broken pins, just wanting to double check my folding on the top. The surround piece that is broken is the tab at the front of the rear surround that the tab at the rear of the front surround overlaps and the bolt with the handle goes through. There's enough left that the front surround is able to hold it in place though.

Here's mine. Looks looked your folds are in the same place. Mine never looks the same way twice anyway so I just try to keep it from laying on the bars...

Thanks, I suspect mine would look a lot better if I had one of the newer tops. The first gen like this one I picked up has the plastic pieces that snap into the surrounds and I've noticed they make it a royal PITA to fold nicely like yours. There's little "joints" for it to fold at but they don't seem placed in the best spot really. That along with the fact that it's old and splitting a bit at them makes it worse.

Still, $50 for the top, all surrounds (albeit one damaged one), and a little work with my dremel to make it clear the moved footman loop on the 2009+ I can't complain. I just can't use it if it's really going to rain. I washed the Jeep with it on and it leaked like a sieve right over the door handles on both front doors. Works great for keeping the sun and hot wind out (even with the windows removed) when it's 95-100+ out though (spiderweb shade helps but is not enough at that point).

If it wasn't in such poor shape overall I might have bought the header kit to fix the wind noise but it's really not worth it. I managed to run across a premium 2013 top a couple weeks ago but couldn't afford the $1000 asking price then (about normal for the premiums from what I understand).
