Hello,

I have been with only 1 key to my jeep wrangler for too long now and i want to fix that by making 1-2 copies. i want to attempt to avoid having to pay 250/key at all costs from the dealer. can someone walk me through which specific key i need to order online and what i need to do to program it? im pretty sure the super walmart near me will cut the key for me. all i need is the specific key to order online and the instructions on how to program it when i just own 1 key? is there any way possible?

Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum!

The Search key is your friend. There are some good threads on this subject.

You need 2 functional keys to be able to create a 3rd spare on your own. The blanks are readily available on ebay for $20.

The chipped keys can be found for that. The remote buttoned ones can run more. Still better to get them from ebay. There are a couple of good sellers on there. Being you have just one you are going to have to go to the dealer to get the second one programmed. You can do as many as 8 then.

I bought my '07 used and it had only one key at the time. I went on line to a place called ikeyless and bought the blank with the chip. I don't have any remotes so it only cost me something like $15. I took it to my local hardware store and they cut it for $5 as I recall. The dealer was the expensive part. They wanted at first to charge me $70 but I talked them down to $20. Good luck in your project.

In the mean time, I just like to say . . .

i just ordered 2 transponder keys from ikeyless. thank you for the tip! i got ahold of the local jeep dealer and he said he will charge me 50 bucks to program it. i am going to check some locksmiths around the area to see if they will do it cheaper. if not, 80 bucks beats the heck out of 260.

thanks again guys!

Key Replacement Jeep Wrangler

I bought a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X that only came with one key. You can program your own if you have two, and it's a quick and simple process. I called the stealership and they wanted $290.00 plus tax for the key and programming. So here's what I did. Cleed 5-6 locksmiths to check programming prices, ran $65-100 just for programming. I bought a blank with remote off of Amazon for $17.95. I took the blank key to a local locksmith, had him cut the blank $5, while I was there I had him make me a transponder key without the remote $75, and then I went home and programmed the remote key myself. All told just under $100 but I have a spare key in my safe so if I every lose one I can replace it for around $20. Hope this helps.
