2012 soft top question

Have a '12 JKU and I picked up a soft top from a guy which supposedly was from a '12 dual top option. After close inspection the surrounds say 2007 -2011. The front surrounds have cracked and separated. I am thinking of trying some JB Weld to try and repair them as replacements are quite expensive. Has anyone tried repairing these? Also what are the differences between the 07 - 11 and the 12 and newer soft tops?

I'm glad you posted this.. Not because your having issues.. but because I never knew there was an issue with the 012 compared to 07-011. I've been attempting to sell my 2 door softie without any success and the issue could be the reason why no takers.
But I do have a question.. was the surround included in your purchase from this other user?.. if so it might actually be the incorrect surround.

It was a complete package. I took it to the dealership to see if there was anything they could do, but said mine did not come with a soft top from factory and that the top I have is not for my model year. Overall I am happy with it, just want to fix or replace the surrounds before I put the soft top back on once it warms up a bit.

Well seems like you may have a couple of options..
  • New surround (assuming the softie actually fits your JKU)
  • New softie or extended bikini
Repairing the simi molded plastic surrounds may work.. for a short time.. It's like once they are broken.. really cant be fixed unless you know someone at a fab shop that has the skills to create shims/sleeves to support the broken area.

The top will fit just fine. If the surround is broken, you will need to replace it. I highly doubt JB Weld would work, but I could be wrong. The years listed for the surrounds are odd. 07-09 surrounds are the same. They changed in 10. The size of the windows in the tops changed in 11, but I have no idea if that affected the surrounds. It shouldn't have.

The surrounds you have should be fine since they presumably came with than the fact that one of them is cracked.

There may also be an interference with the footman loop and the header. I don't know exactly when it was changed, but the earlier models had the footman loop centered and at some point it was offset to the left an inch or two. There is a cutout in the header to clear the loop. Early model tops will interfere with the offset loop, newer model tops have a larger cut out that will accommodate either loop position.

That change was in 08 so it doesn't apply here.

The '10 and later softtops are cable and spring secured. Earlier have the tucked flap. So the door surrounds are different.

Sorry to resurrect an older thread but I'm having a similar issue that you guys touched on... I have a 2010 2 dr... I bought a soft top off of a guy back in the winter that he said was off of his 2010 in which he sold with the hard top on it... He claimed that he put it on for a short while and put his hard top back on because he just didn't like it... Well I may know why he didn't like it... It has an incredible amount of wind noise at the front header panel... I have seen that this is an issue on some due to them being made poorly and constructed of plastic... From what I've read, I doubt it was off of a 2010 because it has the center slot cut out which doesn't line up with my off set freedom top latch... I did dremel the slot out to accommodate the latch bar... It did allow the top to drop down a little but still sticks up close to a 1/4" above the windshield... It also has the tuck in flaps at the door surrounds...
If I bought the replacement header panel with the metal insert would that likely fix my problem? It does seam to look bowed but I can't pull down on it to stop or alter the wind noise (luckily not rained on me yet)... If so, what year should I get it for, my year Jeep or to match the top which is older I assume?
Sorry for writing a book but appreciate any input!

Truly, you would need a smoke test. Since you have confirmed you have an older soft top, the seals on the ends that fit in the the rubber cup on the window frame may need replacing. You can go ahead and replace the header. Might work. I'd give it a 50/50.

Thanks Bob! I appreciate the input! Guess I'll give it a shot.
