2014 Clutch Issue

Bear with me because I'm a Jeep noob, my knowledge spans that of the 5000 miles I've driven my '14 JK.

I am 24 years old and I've driven manual trans cars and trucks since I was 15 (I've never owned an automatic), but I continually have issues with the JK clutch. I have narrowed it down to 3'rd gear and reverse gear. I have to put considerable force shifting into 3rd compared to all other forward gears, and literally almost every time I go to back up, reverse grinds until I jam it in with a good amount of force. I have a hard time believing that a brand new transmission is faulty off the showroom floor, but I guess it could happen.

Does anyone else experience this? Might I have a faulty clutch?

Take that in to get looked at. Mine is pretty smooth. Nothing grinds or takes a ridiculous amount of.pressure.

+1 on bringing it in. In the meantime while going into Reverse, come to a complete stop, clutch down shift into 1, then reverse, see if that stops the grinding. Reverse doesn't have synchros. I can't help you with third [sounds like a problem with the synchros] which is why I said bring it in, something is wrong.

On downshifting into 1... I never have problems with reverse if I've already been driving, it's only when I am in a parking spot and try to reverse out. I'm taking her in tomorrow as per your guys' recommendation. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, how many miles are on it?

I never had any grinding into reverse, but gear selection was notchy and it was initially difficult crossing the gate into reverse. This stuff all went away after a couple thousand miles. I switched over to Redline MTL, just because I was reading that some gearboxes were under-filled from the factory. It was just as easy to dump the fluid and refill as to check it. That would be my immediate concern in your situation.

I had some similar problems on my '13, then at 5900 miles I was playing in the snow a bit and the whole clutch went out. Dealer replaced the whole assembly and its been smooth as silk since then.

I asked about the mileage in my other post, somehow I missed that you included it. Sorry about that. Somethings definitely up if its still doing that with 5k on it.

I saw a 12' go up in smoke on the trail this weekend. He was running in 4WD H and the guys in back thought he was on fire. Too much riding the clutch on the slow stuff. Cooled it down and he went to 4wd LO and it was better the rest of the day. I was surprised how hot it got as this was not that tough of a trail. I am a 6speed guy but opted for the Auto on my new Rubi. Never wheeled an auto before unless you count rental cars,lol. Been a nice change of pace and really like it off road.

This is very important for a 6 speed. There is no downside to running 4low. It takes so much wear off the clutch and you can go up to 25mph so you're set for all wheeling except dunes

Definitely bring it in. I've yet to have any issues with the gearbox in my 2014 JKU.

I have a 13 and I have to make sure it's seated in Reverse all the way or else I am greeted with a grind when I let the clutch out.

Definitely take it and don't wait. The clutch warranty is only 12k.
