2015 JKU overheating

Forgive me if this was discussed before but I took my JK out for its first beach crawl and halfway through I detected that classic engine overheat smell. Here are some details

No rough riding. Just a slow enjoyable drive down the beach (@10-15 mph). Flat land.

Stayed in 4h until I could smell the engine and switched to 2h until my wheels started to spin and I went back to 4h. I didn't spin the wheels enough to cause the smell. As soon as I heard the wheels struggling I stopped and switched back to 4h.

My stability control was on and the light would occasionally blink when the wheels slipped. Could this have been the problem?

Jeep is two weeks old with 600 miles.

Trying not to worry after reading about a possible known problem with the engine overheating and Chrysler not responding. Hopefully I can chalk it up to a noob making a classic off road mistake.

I see your from NC. Our sand here you can run in 4 hi with no problem. You just want to turn off traction control when in 4 wheel drive. I've never put any of my Jeeps in 4 low on sand and never had any issues.
Ok

Auto trans? The issue is with the trans overheating not the engine. 4L will keep an auto tranny cooler and automatically turns off ESP. If you choose 4H in sand always turn it off by holding the button in for 5 seconds.
got it.

If the trans were to get too hot then the "HOT OIL" message would pop up. Since the Jeep is so new it's likely just various oils and pre-assembly corrosion protection coatings burning off some parts.

If anything were truly overheating then the Jeep would tell you. I've done a bit of playing with my JKUR off-road and watched coolant and trans temps, I haven't seen any temp issues at all.

New cars will have some funky smells coming off of them for a little while since things like the exhaust pipes are coated with a light oil-like film to prevent surface rust while waiting to be assembled and installed, this stuff burns off as you drive.
