I have been researching oil and transmission skid plates. I noticed on the Rock Hard site a part of the install has the cross member removed and the oil pan skid plate installed where the cross member was from the factory. What is the purpose of the cross member if it does not support anything? Is it to partially protect the under carriage?

Huh? I have Rock Hard skids and a crossmember (Poison Spyder - the factory one is made of tinfoil). I believe the crossmember supports the transmission (could be wrong). On Rubicons you do lose that worthless inch wide cross piece up front by the exhaust cross if thats what you mean- but believe me, the Rock Hard skids are far beefier than that bitty bar. (I am not sure if that factory piece is even on for Sport or Sahara.)

I found out the cross member I was talking about is what the factory calls the oil pan skid(2014 and up). It is a small dross member that goes from the drivers side to the passengers side. It is not much. The Rock Hard oil, transmission skid plate will work like a real skid plate is supposed to.

Mine is a 2014. I think we are talking about the same piece-so it must be a year based part rather than a model based part (my Lunatics 2007 Sahara and my 2013 Sport didnt have it so we obviously incorrectly assumed it was a Rubicon thing) . It is made of tinfoil. One smack on a rock and mine was bent.

At any rate, the Rock Hard skids are MILES better than anything the factory put on.

This what we're talking about. Poison spyder is so much more solid than the factory.

Dredging up an older thread but man the stock cross members is weak. Hit some obstacles at Truckhaven and came home to a huge dent in the cross member. Poison Spyder it is ....
