Alright guys, so summer is right around the corner and I will be installing some 35" tires on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler 2 door with Manual Transmission.
I currently have the stock 3.21 gears and I need to upgrade.
The things is... I have two set of tires. I use my 33" winter rated tires from mid December to mid March and will be using some 35" Nitto Ridge Grappler for the rest of the year.
So my question is, if I use two different tire size throughout the year, 33" AND 35", which gears should be better? 4.10 or 4.56?
I'd say I do 90% highway and the other 10% is a mix of city and very mild offroading. (or at least for now)
Yes, but why do you own a jeep instead of something else? I am guessing not for the highway performance. However I see you live up north and snow is probably a factor.
I currently am running 35s with 4.10 gears. Around town it does what it is supposed to, but never use 6th gear (does that matter?). Cruising at 70 on the interstate is no problem, but I need to downshift for hills and still loose speed. This week 4.88s are going in. I am looking for a bit more get up and go, plus I hit the beach weekly and it bogs down a bit in 4H. If it was me, I would go with the 4:56 as you drive the 35s for 3/4 of the year.
I'm only planning on running 33's for the life of my Jeep, so I went for 4:10's. The shop recommended 3:73's. I'm very happy I didn't take their recommendation, in fact I really could've gone to 4:56 and been even happier. My rpm's at 70 mph are 2600. We've got a lot of rolling hills here and I spent a lot of time shifting gears. That's gotta shorten tranny life. Now I just hear the motor load up a little and cruise up those same hills. Gas mileage went from 18.8 to 18.4 per the evic. Better to err on the high side (low side?) in my experience.
thanks! i'm in the same boat right now, 3.21 on 285/70/17... honestly, did you feel a big difference? i'm in canada and the best price i have to do the re-gear is 2500$...
My regear was $1600. Yukon 4:11's. I took a 6000 mile trip out to San Francisco from Tennessee and the drive out was pretty bad. Head winds and climbing the hills, 800 ft to 8000 ft I was constantly downshifting from fifth to third gear lots of times.
Just returned from a 600 mile round trip to East Tennessee after the regear, up and down the hills, and the drive was night and day different.
It was very tiring trying to get the Jeep to stay in overdrive before the regear. Now it drives like the motor has the power it should.
I highly recommend the regear, you'll love your Jeep even more.

I am running 35s with my stock 3.73 gearing with the 3.8 I would definetly go 4.88 as mine feels way underpowerd at times. Some people I read about go with the 5.13s and like it.

I have officially upgraded my gears, I went from 3.21 to 4.56 and I'm happy I did! Thank you for your input guys!
I was kinda used to driving 3.21 on 33s, it wasn't that bad I thought.. when I got on 4.56, OH BOY THE DIFFERENCE!! It's a bit overkill for 33s but I will be installing the 35s soon (at least I hope, damn you CAD dollar you suck) and it will be just perfect!
1st gear feels like I'm driving a racecar: clutch out AND ZOOM straight to 2nd gear.
On the highway, I usually just put my jeep on cruise control at 100km/h.
When I was on 3.21 with 33s, I was around 2200 rpm in 5th gear and somewhere around 1700-1800 rpm in 6th.. I was actually never using the 6th gear, the rpm was so low that I was getting worse MPG and I had no power what so ever, I stayed in 5th. (rip 6th gear)
Now on 4.56 with 33s, I'm at like 2500 rpm in 6th gear. A tad high I'd say. If 33s was my final tire size, I would've gone with 4.10 for sure! (or stayed with 3.21, no biggie) But knowing I'm going 35s, 4.56 is the right choice.
The pros that I notice going from 3.21 to 4.56 are:
- A LOT easier to start from a complete stop. I used to "ride" the clutch a bit before to get enough speed to get the Jeep going. Now with 4.56, as soon as I let the clutch out I'M GONE!
- Going over small obstacles takes less effort. I need to give less gas and I don't feel like the engine is struggling and about to stall like it was on 3.21. Going over the sidewalk to get my morning coffee is way more enjoyable now!
-I don't need to downshift when I'm going uphill like I used to do. I have enough power to climb that hill and overtake someone while I'm at it!
The con of 4.56:
-I need to get used to using the 6th gear again!!
So that's it, now I can't wait to get my 35s to get the perfect ride
Cheers!
Sorry I don't.. The only thing I had to change with my gears was the case in the front. When you have 3.21 in the Dana 30, you need to change the case.
The case was like 130$CAD
Confused tho - your display only has a 31.75 inch tire. If you have 33s, your speedometer is off - so your readings will not be accurate. Or that is one tiny tire masquerading as a 33.
I have a heavy 15 JK 6MT on heavy 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers on 4.10s. I have moved to Denver and would like to regear. This is not a daily driver. It will see highway time to trail rides. I don't usually go over 70mph. I was leaning towards 4.56 as I dont anticipate 37s anytime soon but now I am thinking I would be happier with 4.88s. Think the RPMs will be tolerable.
If you consider that 35's are actually 33.8", the 3.6 with auto trans and 4.56 will be at 2783 rpm @ 70mph
Actual 33's are 31.5" so same setup than above will be at 2986 rpm @ 70mph
Auto trans rev higher by approx 200-300 rpm then manual. So manual jk on 4.56 will be at the same rpm in 6th gear @ 70mph then a jk with auto trans in 5th gear at same speed.
I just wrestled with a similar question and all the feed back from the forums is to go with 4.56. At least with my 16 JKU sport anyway. Like you, OP, mine is a DD and I don't really tow with it but want the option. I'm in the front range area of colorado, so hills and mountainous trails all around.
3k RPM at 70mph? LOL. Homey don't do that in Texas. Average highway speed down here is 80mph. You'd be lucky to see 12mpg on the highway at those RPMs with a lifted Jeep.
I have a '16 Rubi with factory 4.10s. Slapped a set of 35/12.5R17 BFG KO2s on it and I run all day every day at 2500-2600 RPM @ 80mph. Right where it should be.
Jeeps aren't sports cars. And while the 3.6 is a decent engine you have physics working against it (gross vehicle weight, rolling mass, aerodynamics, etc.). Throwing gears at a rig that sees a lot of highway is a double edged sword - feels good at first but takes the engine and transmission out of the engineered envelope.
Use the grimmjeeper calculator, input stock tire specifications, transmission and 3.73 gears then play with desired tire sizes and gear ratios to figure out what gets you closest to stock. The gear ratio spreadsheets are garbage.
15 JK Rubi 6MT 4.10s on 35 heavy. I was struggling out of Denver heading to Moab. Deep snow was like quicksand. 3rd coming up the hills. Now that I am living out here I think that I will do the 4.88s. That way when I go to 37s I will still be covered. Jeeps NOT a DD, is only driven for trail rides and occasional around town on weekends. also $2k to go from 4.10 to 4.56 doesnt seem to make financial sense. Might as well go to 4.88s for my $.
I will follow up once I get the rig shipped out here. I am in temp housing now as my house won't be done until Oct. I need to find a secure place for the rig to sleep.
We are running the high trails in Ouray, Silverton and Leadville in July so I will want to regear well before that.
