Anyone know the size of the cap nuts that come with the aluminum hawse fairleads standard with the Zeon winches? I'm guessing 3/8 but can't find the spec anywhere.
I asking because mine started rusting the day we got our first snow of the season. I mounted the winch in October & November they looked like this, I'm guessing the cap nuts are stainless or zinc plated, want to replace with aluminum ones
Warn says 7/16" - 14 thread (which should be a 3/4 socket based on what I've found so far).
The Warn CS rep said zinc platted steel (not stainless) so I'm going to try SS first, then aluminum (which are more expensive, more pliable and harder to find) if that doesn't work out.
I would think Warn would replace those free of charge if it is a new winch. I put on my Zeon 10S last June which was mounted on the stock bumper. I replaced the stock bumper with Hyline last week and the acorn nuts still looked brand new.
That's a good thought bearman, but given your location (DFW) I'm guessing your's weren't exposed to much road salt. I submerged mine in waterfordings on Drummond Isaland for a month before this happened to mine. This is what they looked like the day after the first road salt...day before that they looked new.
Given the fact that these are neither SS or aluminum, I have little confidence that Warn replacements would hold up any better in this climate (since the Warn rep confirmed that they are Zinc platted steel and not stainless).
Since replacing these on the AEV bumper is likely to be a PITA (I'm not sure I'll be able to hold the bolt heads steady on the other side without at least dropping the skid plate and maybe the whole bumper), I think it's worth the $5 + tax to get some SS or aluminum ones that are less likely to suffer the same fate.
Yeah you are right, no road salt in the DFW area. Let us know where you get the stainless steel ones, I may need some one day, LOL.
