Talking And then there was Voice......

Well, I have still yet to understand the rationale behind DC not making my purchased Uconnect & VR functions work out of the showroom on my new maxxed out JK 4-dr. Rubi, but perhaps someone else can shed some light.

I am sure all of the existing JK owners and scholars know this, but thought I would share my experience in case there were any newbies that needed some insight. I know I didn't know any of this before this past weekend. I thought I needed to "pay the dealer" a hefty fee to get these services to work.

In any case, I had a great experience with ecoastaltech.com and I have the required RER NAVI system, so all I needed was the external mic and some Engineering menu modifications to get my Uconnect and voice functions to work for my NAV/SAT/DVD/Radio accessories.

All in all, the process took about 20 minutes, I could now do it in about 10 easily.
  • 1. Pop the dash console cover off - 2 clips in rear.
  • 2. Unscrew (2) 7mm screws holding front bezel in place.
  • 3. Pop the remainder of the bezel out carefully down to the shifter
  • 4. Unscrew the (4) 7mm screws holding the NAV in place.
  • 5. Slide the unit forward, find the square MIC connector.
  • 6. Connect the mic and run the wire down the drivers side.
  • 7. Slide unit back, replace screws and bezel.
  • 8. Go to Engineering Menu on unit (Hold Menu/ScanUp/ScanDown keys)
  • 9. Go to screen #4, and enable last item JK VR/XX system...
  • 10. Setup and enjoy....

Now, I am informed that this will not work on all models or variations, but on
my 2009 RER system, it worked flawlessly. The mic cost $20 and it is well worth it. Not sure why this was not "included" from the factory and I had to disassemble half of the console to "add a mic" to a system that I already paid for in my vehicle purchase, but that is the mystery...

I have pics if needed, but they seemed somewhat redundant at this point as the jobis very straight-forward and I figured it out without any instructions nor guidance (except for the engineering menu sequence of course)

HTH.

I agree with you on this and in fact, when purchasing mine...we had to go back and forth to "understand" the whole uConnect thing and why there isn't a mic from the factory and how to "enable" it..etc. I found it quite cumbersome for a full blown nav/high end, stock radio...but I did the same as you...Installed a lockpick2,and mic, rear cam and aux inputs module etc...and mounted in the top dash plate

Nice setup, I'd love to do all the above you listed, especially the backup camera, lot of little kids in our neighborhood running around on their scooters and when I finally get 37s I expect I won't have any view hardly, especially with a tire carrier. Blows my mind as well why they didn't include this on a fully loaded Rubi

Andy,

Where did you get the mic that you speak of? Maybe I'll try it on mine. Was it a dealer purchase?

I totally agree...i can't see a damn thing out the back with stock tires and no lift. I thought the idea of the backup cam on a jeep was funny but it is incredibly useful for the street driving I do...especially at the kid's school...it was well worth the money.

Do you know if the same procedure will work on the regular Infiniti radio. I have the u-connect buttons on the face plate so I assume it would?

I don't believe so. I think it is only RER NAVI with the MYGIG systems. It won't work unless you have a RER "MyGIG" unit which actually has the VR/speech controller module built in. If you don't, I think you will need to purchase the lockpick system to enable all of the functions or have the dealer install the full kit.

I have determined why I believe the Voice was left off of the NAVI system. It is plain ridiculous to attempt to use it when the tops are off, a complete failure. (at nearly any speed without A/C on or radio)

I actually use it for one thing and one thing only --- The bluetooth alert will at least notify me when I do get a call that I normally would miss and it flashes up on the NAV screen and lowers the music. That is all I can and do use it for. Now, I don't mind spending $20 for that feature, but I would be miffed if I had to purchase the whole lockpick system and not be able to use it.

Perhaps with the tops in place, of course, it might actually be something worth my time.
Just wanted to share my experiences.

Andy,
We just bought a 09 Sahara Unlimited and according to the window sticker, it has a Multimedia Navigation system with GPS, Touch Screen Display and Hard Disc drive.
If this is the same unit you have, please forward the pics.
Thanks.

I'm reading through this and I am happy to see this was done so I can do the same to my Jeep. So Thanks for the information.

I have a few questions I hope you can answer.

1. What does a lockpic2 do for you?
2. I knows this same unit in a van can play DVD's. Does this unit have outputs in the back to be able to install screens in the back? ( have a 3 year old)
3. Is there a way to make the main unit play DVD's on the screen?
4. Where did you get the camera? Where did you install it.

That's all I have for now but I may have more in the future

Thanks
Bruce

1. Lockpick2 does a few things. It unlocks the DVD while driving "lock" so you can play dvd's while driving (for occupants obviously). It also unlocks updating the nav directions while driving. It also gives you the ability to add 2 cameras if needed. With the optional av input/output harness it also gives you the ability to have audio/video inputs and audio/video outputs for a rear screen. ONE note...you cannot use the a/v inputs and push out that info through the a/v outputs...e.g. if you use the av inputs to pump iPod video in you cannot push that back out the a/v outputs to a rear screen. I do this because I have lots of 5yr old tv shows on my iPod for the little one and I cannot push that video to a back screen.
You can watch that on the front screen or use any combination of dvd to the a/v outputs etc. The guide tells you all you can do.

2. The myGig doesn't have any a/v outputs but using the Lockpick2 with the av harness does give you the abilityto add screens to the back. You can only play the dvd to the rear though.

3. Without lockpick2 you can play a DVD on the front screen only when in park.

4. I got my camera from SolidSignal.com. They had a a better price by a few bucks than coastaletech.com. I mounted it under the rear bumper as I wont' be seeing much off roading.

Good luck.

Anyone install the full Lockpick 2 in their Navi equip'd Wrangler? Not being able to imput info while driving is bugging out the Mrs...and me. The Lockpic seems like the ultimate answer.

My 2010 Sahara Unlimited with MYGIG has the mic already installed (A Pillar) and VR and Uconnect work right out of the box. Guess somebody tipped off DC that they forgot to include them.

Didnt someone on here also say that you can get DVDs to play when not in park just by grounding one wire? Just thought it might save some ppl some bucks if they are only getting lockpick for that reason.
