Any Issues with the 6 speeds?

I am looking at buying my first jeep. I have always been a muscle car guy so I like shifting my own gears. I am thinking of buying the Unlimited X with the 6 spd. BUT... I had a buddy of mine who had I think an '03 Wrangler standard shift and it was junk. Under warranty he had it rebuilt twice and replaced once before he traded it back in...and it only had 20k easy miles on it. The dealership mechanic stated the standard shifts in Jeeps are hit-n-miss, but are usually junk.

So my question is are the 6 spds currently out good transmissions? This Jeep will do light off-roading at my family farm in TN and such, but will never be a rock crawler. This will be my DD and kid hauler so I want to make sure it will be in it for the long haul.

Thanks.

The clutch throwout bearing and clutch plate are crap. I got used to the clutch chirp when shifting. Time to upgrade to a Centerforce.

He just nailed it, my 4th throwout bearing was done 2 weeks ago, still chirps, has always worked right, just chirped, they told me last time it was warrantied but Chrysler has red-flagged my Jeep if it doesn't it again they may not cover it. Had a nice discussion with the service manager and have within 15 minutes of hearing that from them had that option thrown out the window. With 10k miles left under warranty they'll fix whatever is wrong that is a mfg defect

These new 6spd trannies are excellent, as golfspaz stated eventually upgrading to an aftermarket clutch (Centerforce is the only one building one right now I hear) will alleviate the former rattling issue. The only other issue they had was an updated clutch assembly, throwout bearing and full clutch kit along with a re-designed clutch slave cylinder, all the new ones have this setup though.

The transmission itself is pretty stout. I just talked to our service manager- he hasn't seen anything on the trans itself, but we have seen 3 cases where the t-o bearing was junk, and one bad disc, all in '07's. '09's, no problems yet, knock on wood Personally, I won't run anything but stick, and I like the 6-speed. It's not the most precise unit, and the gearing isn't great, but for what it is, it's a solid unit- Mark W.

Thank you for the replies.

Do you know if the TOB is covered under the lifetime warranty, or is considered a "normal" wear and tear item? I know I have replaced them several times with my Mustang's in the past...but they are usually 10 years old and have 100k on them.
