Recently had my 2013 JKU In the shop complaining of a hard downshifting issue. They found an update for the transmission and completed the update.
I am still experiencing the same issue, just on a lesser scale. I wanted to try to explain it here to see if anyone can offer insight in to whether it's normal or a problem and if it's a problem where to start looking for a fix.
When accelerating gently and in second gear with RPM's around 1500-2000 if I let off the gas completely the RPM's drop, obviously, but it's accompanied by a thunk and sometimes it feels like the jeep is being shoved from behind. It appears to happen when shifting from 2nd to 3rd after I've let off the gas.
I hope this makes sense to someone and somebody can offer an explanation, cause and/or how to fix it.
Join the club, been having second to third gear issues for over a year. Hard lurching shifts, sways in rpms under constant acceleration and a few times chunking when downshifting. None of this happens in manual mode. No error codes so dealer shrugs.
There is a TSB that covers this exact thing I'll update this post with it after work. However it doesn't seem to completely solve the issue. If you are having the same thing and your software hasn't been updated you can have them at least do the update....
I think I brought this up in another thread, but it sounds like the lockup torque converter doing its thing. Old overdrive transmissions used to just do it in top gear. I think the new ones are able to do it in any gear.
after about 200 hours in the shop my brother ditched his 2012. trans issues, engine issues, evap issues, you name it, it happened. id of thought the bugs would be worked out by 2013-14 but it sounds like no
You would think and if not you'd think they'd own up to it. I had to fight to get a water pump, for example, and it's a known problem!!! I LOVE my jeep I LOVE owning a Jeep and everything a Jeep stands for! But this shit is killing me!
After driving a friends 2013 who complained about a similar problem I believe it's the TC locking and unlocking in gears other than OD. Kind of weird and annoying, but I think its the nature of the beast and some people are less aware of it than others. I found it annoying. JMO
I'm far from perfect and like you say once you are aware of it, it's extremely annoying. I tend to pick up on issues like this and they drive me insane.
You're welcome. I'm not really sure.... I usually notice something as I'm letting off the gas between 2nd and 3rd... I've also noticed while coasting it feels like I'm dragging a foot on the break (did that once driving go-karts, embarrassing), but I'm not and the jeep is slowing, when I get back on the gas it's usually accompanied by a loud click and sometimes a jerk. Not to be confused with the jerk driving.
Yea it's definately annoying. Feels like the tranny is slipping or something. When I go to pass or merge on the freeway and it stalls with my foot in it I almost always curse. If this tranny is made to do this on purpose then its not the jeep for me. May sound a bit picky but having owned two previous jeeps Its not acceptable to me
I think the best way to be happy with an automatic transmission is just to ignore everything it does until it actually gets to the point where it won't get you from one place to another. I have never had an automatic that seemed to do everything how I expected it to. But, for towing, driving in the city, and being warrantied to 100k, I prefer the auto in my JKU to the manual.
