What is the best source of constant 12V only when my jeep is running, but won't provide 12V when off? Looking to tap a 12V for power for my rear view camera (constant on). Need a source near back of jeep.
I was looking at tapping the 12V Accessory in the trunk, but was afraid of draining the battery when the car was off. This true?
I would just run a small gauge wire from your front keyed 12V outlet. My rearview camera uses the reverse lights in the back for power, but some cameras can have a delay when they power up. You can run the power and ground in parallel with the video cable you'll need. I ran both up and over the roll cage under the fabric cover.
I tapped the 12V power outlet in the dash, the cigarette lighter outlet. It has plenty of overhead for a backup camera to draw anytime the key is on. It's easy to get to as well.
Under the cover at the base of the roll bar on the right side you should find an extra 3pin wiring connector. Or it will be connected to a 12v outlet if you have the upgraded audio package. That is the power source I tapped into. I dont recall the colors but they were fairly straight forward to figure out which was pos and neg.
It seems all of the manufacturers are making fuse boxes with the switched/batt locations. Party. I'm installing dashcams in most of my cars, so this is good to know.
