Cannot program a new key (dealter too) 2014 JKUR

Hi,

Wanted a third key. Bought one and had it cut to my vin at the dealer. Right part number confirmed later.

Could not program it.

Took it to the dealer. They could not program it either.

They got a new key after telling me the part number may be off...it was not (their guy did it for me). They cut the key. They again could not program it.

So the electronic guru mechanic took over. Two parts might be at risk. Chrysler only lets warranty work happen one step at a time, so only part one was ordered.

It did not fix the problem and the guy had to re-install the first part as the old keys did not work now too (a module is what I was told was what was installed).

They then got approved to get the PCM and today it was installed, everything was reprogrammed. The original keys apparently work with it but the new keys (two now) cannot be added to the Jeep. I am back to square one. The mechanic has said that anything that could be replaced has been replaced..there is no fix from here.

Now, let me clear. My dealer and the people there are super duper. They have got me taken care of 100%. The service team has gone out of their way to help me on my schedule, squeezed me in, felt bad. I know good and bad dealers..they are good people.

What I want to know is if anyone anywhere has had this problem. They suspect it will be a Chrysler software fix at some higher level, but were told it was not known....granted it is a 2014 and the keys are not cheap...so I may just be the first one.

Kind of had the same problem.

Bought two keys on Ebay. When I got them the first key programmed correctly. Went to program the second one and it would not program.

Contacted the seller and they sent me a replacement key and this would not program either.

I have a email to the key seller to see if they have any futher information on programming 2014 Wranglers.

Any more information on this key issue would be helpful.

You want a third key, it can be buttonless, but it will save your bacon.
They are about $8 each, get cut at Home Depot, and you can program them in about 5 minutes. I've probably made 15 or 20 of them in the last 5 years. (6 JKUs and a Dodge Ram)

Here's a thread I wrote, it was initially written for the up to 2013 models, buy the same key Y164-PT, worked on my 2014 (and 2013).

What a rip-off. For my '13 I went to https://ikeyless.com and bought my blanks and programed them myself using their instructions. Worked flawlessly. I have my own key machine so I didn't have to pay extra for cutting the key.

Well,

Contacted my dealer and it turns out there is a new software update to the Jeep. Chrysler had to come up with a real fix and my issue (and perhaps others') is a real issue.

The dealer had to get two new blank keys to replace the keys that currently work...then the two that would not program (still blank) will be added. Hopefully it will be successful or I'll be sans any key.

Just FYI to everyone ...

On the buttonless savings - that is awesome information! Thank you!

I had the same experience on the Ebay keys. Bought 2, the first one programed fine the second would not. I figure I'm still $ ahead.

Find a old guy at an ACE hardware store (Chains like Home Depot sometimes have policies about not cutting keys they don't sell). Or a small locksmith shop. If they ask, tell them it is chipped, but it cuts like a normal key. I had them screw up one in about 15 or 20.

My local hardware store cut my key for free. I offered to pay, but he said no charge.

I bought two. The first one programmed. The second didn't. www.cyclesportandfitness.com
Is sending me a replacement but it obviously isn't the key.
It's the software.
Thanks, Tom, for your concern. I appreciate the customer service.
Regarding key cutting I Went to lowes and was turned away
The gentleman at home cheapo was helpful.
he pointed out there were no guarantees and if there was a mis-cut he didn't have anything to replace my blank. we had a verbal agreement the risk was mine

In my previous post I assumed it was the software of the 2014 JK that prevented my 2nd key from programming. The merchant replaced the key that would not program. I easily programmed the replacement key on the first try. I have two spare keys with chips that work just like OEM. Good deal. I recommend Tom at Cycle Sport & Fitness for an inexpensive spare key with a chip and good customer service. Thanks again, Tom, for sticking with the issue.

I used Cycle sport and fitness and just had the local locksmith cut my keys (he charged $5) then I went out programed them on 14 jkur. funny thing is when I tried to open my door before programing them it set off my horn. So for $39 I have two spare keys.
I will say that programing was not exactly like the owners manual as there was no chimes that went off. The security light flashed tho.

I cannot get my third key to be programmed!

Just took delivery of my 2014 Jeep 2 days ago.

Bought a key from Cycle Sport, had the key cut (opens all the locks) and have tried the programming sequence several times with no joy.

Do I need to try another spare key from Cycle Sports?

FYI, I've never had an issue with other cars when it comes to programming extra keys.

Are you following the instructions to a tee that are in the owners manual? I did not get the chimes but mine programmed fine. Took about 2 or 3X because the no chimes was throwing me off. I programed 2 and after I realized the chimes were not important they second one took one time.

Yes, I did them exactly per the manual.

Very frustrating!

The TSB is more for the people who had the remote start installed at the dealer level or who had the WCM replaced for other reasons. I have had problems programming Chrysler vehicles using the procedure in the manual in the past but I was able to program them using the Chrysler software. Sorry probably not much help.

Do these eBay chipped keys have batteries in them? And if so I wonder what the shelf life is, and are They replaceable batteries? I'm assuming not.

The keys have a RFID chip in them, the RFID chip gets power from the transmitter/reader so no battery unless you have remote keyless entry.

Out of the extra three keys (I bought two more from Ebay) I only was able to get one programmed.
