Changing the Front Bumper

My 2008 JK "X" front Milk-jug bumper has to go!!! I'm so sick of that thing!!!!

I found and ordered a neat tube bumper here:

Rampage Products 86620 - Rampage Products Dual Tube Front Bumper with Hoop in Black for 07-09 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

I'm not running any fog lights or anything so it'll be just a straight-forward mechanical swap, but I'm wondering about what tools will be needed.

Is it just hex bolts or Torx or what, that's holding the milk-jug bumper on?

Can you give me a clue as to the total number of bolts I'll have to remove and their basic location? (I can see some of the bolts from the backside of the bumper, but I don't want to miss any in the removal. (heck,....if I miss any, it won't come off til I find em, but I'd like a heads up before I attack it).

This ought to be an easy job for me,......I have a ton of "backyard mechanic" experience behind me, so I'm just looking for any advice on unseen "watch out for this" kinda advice.

Thanks,

-Nutmegger1957

You'll just need a socket set, some pliers, and screwdrivers to take the old one off.
And a few beers (and swear words).

This will show you how to take off your bumper:

nice looking bumper! curious, can you put the fog lights on from the S package?

I was looking at this one.

It has space for a wrench, which I am not sure if I will be getting anytime soon ($$), I think I saw a none wrench plate version of this, but see how the fog lights fit in?

opps the wrench mount is not included in this, fyi.

but the one your getting is a bit cheaper.

I didn't need a winch setup or fog lights, (I have neither, and want neither), so it should be a basic install.

I'm wondering at the moment about how the airbag (yes, after all....it's a 2008), is hooked to the front bumper. Since it's activated by a front end collision, I wonder if there is a wiring issue with the milk-jug bumper, or if it is wired to a sensor behind the milk-jug, and will be a non-issue for this install?

There's no "sensor" in the bumper at all.

Winches and auxilliary lighting can come in handy, btw, if you intend to go offroad. It's cheaper to think ahead than play catch-up...

Here's mine. About $800 for bumper, winch, lights, & mount. Took half a day to install and wire the entire mess due to de-installation of the existing equipment.

Nice looking, and certainly functional............someday I'll do more "off road" but for now, I can't afford to keep replacing broken stuff.

Speaking of Fog Lights however, considering the hump tube my bumper comes with, what recommendations would you make for suspending fog lights from the top of the hump tube?

I haven't broken anything offroad; just go slowly and pick good lines. It's only as destructive as you make it.

Bazillions of mounts for lights; take your pick:

4Wheel Parts during one of their one-day sale days. I walked in and said, "gimme a smokin' deal, please."
And they did.

The light mount came from Quadratec though. A to Z fab.

Ya really don't need dual batteries. I have a ProCal that lets me keep the RPM's up when i winch.
