I'm not sure what it is, it comes and goes. About a week ago I took my 07 Rubicion to the dealership and they thought it was the pads barely touching at time but they didn't really know. Today it started louder, but I really noticed it after hitting the underside of the frame to get some mud off. I've crawled under the Jeep, the drive shafts are rock solid, no movement whatsoever when I apply a lot of pressure to them.
Any Ideas? Taking it back to the dealership tomorrow ...
I'm pretty sure mine happens only when rolling, going to go test that out right now, be bask in a few, I can't afford u-joints, dealer wants $350 freakin' bucks, uggh
It's definitely in either the drive train or a brake pad/caliper issue? I turned the Jeep off and and coasted keeping the clutch in, still heard the noise, chirping won't happen when running the engine and not moving. Also, the chirping is linked (that is how quickly it chirps) to how fast I am moving. The faster the quicker the chirp. I did go through some deep water a while back and that is when it started, somebody said take the front drive shaft off and check the ball in it? Have no idea what they meant. I'm capable of taking the drive shaft off though, any advice? I really want to save the high priced dealer fee's on this, money is tight for us.
Because I hit it with water and it seemed more pronounced? Is that why you are saying that? Just curious and thank you for chiming in. The thing that worries me is it seemed to start after going through some deep water, but it's not that loud and me noticing it then might have been a coincidence, but maybe not ...
Ya, I have an appointment first thing in the morning, I'll reply back on here with what they say, a lot of folks are saying the water might have displaced the grease in the ball of the CV or driveshaft, not sure what it all means, would love to do this myself as I am trying to do all my own work but this one is beyond me without seeing it done first.
Okay, so I bought a floor jack and jack stand, the noise was definitely coming from the right rear tire. I took the tire off, then the caliper and finally the pads. The groove in the pad to let the dust out was filled solid, you could barely tell they were there. I took a small straight head screw driver and got all the gunk out and brake cleaner removed the rest, reinstalled, not chirping (yet) as the sound is intermittent. Does anyone thing that could have been it? I didn't know to put brake pad grease on the little grooves where the pads rest and I recall that being pretty dry, could be the pads were making more contact than they should.
I had this very same issue. The sound would resonate off of passing cars or objects as I drove by them. The Jeep also made a sound, that is hard to explain, but a deep whirling sound that sounded like it was winding down when I would brake and come to a full stop. Turns out it was my right rear brake caliper, rotor and pads. Lost my back brakes while driving. This is the second time this has happened in the Jeep so I know what to listen/feel for. I just can't figure out why it keeps happening!
