Code P0306

We were on a long stretch of up hill highway today, between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Running about 75-80mph. Threw this code P0306, says #6 Cylinder misfire. Anyone have this issue before. Jeeps only got 2800 miles on her. Thanks.

Search the pentastar cylinder head issue. That's the same fault code triggered in the pre 2013s when the left head went bad.

Read this thread.... especially page 5.

Does my 2013 JK have an AB or AC head?

You probably did... the early heads are surfacing on 2014's.

Must be someone at Jeep trying to exhaust the inventory by slipping these early heads into production - probably been in quarantine.

My guess, they performed a FMEA and decided it's low risk.

Looks like buying off the lot vs. ordering might be a smart move now. Pop the hood and make sure it has an AC head before buying, even for 2015's. If they going to be gradually sneaking leftover AC heads into production how do we know they won't do it with the 2015's too?

Demar...

I would order one the way you want and take delivery contingent on the Jeep has AC heads. If it has anything other than AC then I would pass on the purchase and order another one.

I doubt they have that many stockpiled... probably sitting in Mexico.

That's a very good idea, I wonder if there would be any dealers opposed to that?

They should be extending the warranty on those old AA heads if they are being used up. I can't believe they would put them back in service without a rework.

Me either but if they put re-manufactured parts in a new vehicle they'd be in some deep sh-t I think.

Yeah this thread isn't all that fun. I never checked my 2014 until I read this stuff and now ran out to see what I have. Early build 2014... 2703B. Guess I'm safe on this one? Above a 206.

Now to move on to the tweeter crossover mod.

If there's a way for you to look at the Julian date on the head, this may shed new light on the situation.

Some questions come mind:

1. How hot was it outside when you threw the code?

2. Did you check your coolant temps when it happened?

3. What brand and octane gas are you running?

.

Oh man, I also wanted to know now and just checked mine... My JK was built end of April. The passenger side valve cover says AC (not so much relevant, I know) and the driver side head is stamped 054B, which should mean was built January 5th 2014 if I understood this right, therefore "hopefully" alright.

What a nightmare if one would find 2012 heads in their 2014 model now... Geez!

Good luck everybody!

If I'm reading this right it appears you have heads with a date code March 27, 2014.

I'm curious to see what they find.

Alright, you guys got my attention now!!! Where do I find these stampings exactly, and does one need to remove the top plastic engine cover to see.

Is there a link with how to read the stampings?!?

Makes sense... usually the engine is manufactured and assembled a few months prior to the vehicle. Does it have the plant the engine came from? I think it's stated on the window sticker.

Stick you head up by your brake booster, and look down at the head, just above the area where the exhaust flange bolts to it. There is a small, flat area there where the julian date code is etched into the head.

Those two dates are interesting. I've got an early build 2013. July 27, 2012 to be exact. The julian date on my cylinder head is 2022B if I recall correctly. That puts the build date of the cylinder head about 1 week before my jeep was built. Obviously, that was right in the middle of the head shortage/rework time frame. My production date is two days after the warranty extension cut off, but I received the letter anyway. Makes you wonder if these guys are properly keeping track of everything.

That a lot of warranty risk. Maybe the tried to do some sort of repair like a bore out with a bushing.

With as much egg as Chysler has/had on its face over this issue the resurfacing of faulty head is shameless. C'est la vie.

So does that mean the AC heads might have the problem now? Keeping up with this can be confusing.

I guess we'll soon find out. Through my eyes, the OP doesn't have one those rare excursions Chrysler speaks about. Air, gas and coolant temps seem to be normal.

If they replace the head, I'll be expecting an extended warranty in the mail.
