Diff whine

Hello everyone
I just had my jeep re geared to 4.56 from 3.21. A new carrier was installed up front along with master install kits front and rear. Anyways when i first got the gears they seemed to be dead quiet. Then at about 500 miles they started to develop a whine at about 35-45 mph when decelerating (coasting) and it only appeared to be when cold. Now im almost at 900 miles and the noise is getting worse. Again only seems to be when cold but now when it gets in the the above mentioned speed range it does it coasting or accelerating as well. Was told by my mechanic (not the actual guy who set up the gears) that it is normal because its cold and the oil isnt flowing correctly. Had a guy agree with that. On another note had multiple people disagree saying they should be completely quiet cold or hot (which i tend to lean more towards, but i really trust my mechanic)Had one guy mention loose pinion preload. Please advise. Thanks.

Did you check the oil level? Is it the correct oil?

Are the Ring and Pinions new?

No, they should not make any noise, cold or hot.

If the oil and level are correct, then whoever set up the R/P pattern, didn't get it correct!

Checked the oil level, both are good to go. And hope it can be recovered. I have almost 1k miles on it already. And yes they are brand new.

without load on the gear set, there not much chance of noise from the gear set. That means the front axle S/B gear set is unlikely the problem. Rear axle would be the more likely source. If noise gets worse under load (going uphill, for example) then it is gear set up. It could be loose pinion but I doubt it. You might be able to check this. If it is bad enough there would be end play in the pinion shaft. grab the yoke and see if any looseness (play) is evident. Driveshaft (CV-joints) will make chirp noises. U-joints will usually make a clunking sound when speeding up or slowing down.

Your mechanic is full of it...I would be looking for a new mechanic. He knows absolutely nothing about gears or axles. Regardless, i would be camping at the shop that did your axle work. They either did something wrong or sold you really poor quality parts (maybe both). You mention a new diff carrier was installed on the front...this makes me wonder if the bearings were set up wrong as well.

Just re-built the kid's rear 44 in her JKU. I pulled the axle out and placed it on a stand. ZERO pre-load. Pulled it apart. Crush sleeve was intact. Outer bearing managed to heat and gaul the inner sleeve of the bearing and the pinion shaft. The issue that made me pull it apart was a vibration that had developed in the rear end. The gears you have are past their break-in and have developed a howl. They are installed incorrectly. I'd take it back to whomever installed them.

O.k., since the oil and level check out. Plus the R/P are new, which eliminates used R/P whine issues, then I would take it back to the shop that performed the work!
A whine is normally a R/P issue. The shop should be able to put a stethoscope on it, and determine for sure. Some shops have very high tech stethoscopes with attachable probes, that can be watched and analyzed when driving.

Either way, they are responsible to make it right!!!!!

Look around the Cv Joints. Once they lose grease and dry up they can whine and make noise.

Im gonna try to get him to look at it but unfortunately he is not the one who set up the gears. He subs it out to a guy a little further than an hour away. Im sure he can look at it but i doubt he has the tools at the shop to fix it (if it can be fixed at this point.) also i work every weekday so its damn near impossible to meet up. I was on vacation when the work was done lol

You said decell and coasting ? The rear pinion will raise under acceleration. Check the rear CV joints. I forget do you have rear arms?

The shop that performed the gear change for you, should be able to help diagnose, what is causing the issue.
My guess without hearing it, is that it's a workmanship issue on them. But nothing is conclusive until it is accurately diagnosed!

Hopefully, you have a written warranty from the shop!

It began as just decell and coasting but i believe it is across the board now from 35-45 mph. And nope just the stockers. Did have 3.5" of lift for a little while because i ran my BB and 4 door springs but took them out because it drove like doo. (Far to many geo issues) maybe that had something to do with it.... I honestly hope its drive shaft. Lol

Ok you got me out there and its def front pinion related. Its leaking a touch from the front pinion and has a LOT of play. These are pics. Notice the hole on the joint and its position. I never moved the camera only twisted the shaft. Gotta be 1/2" to 1" of movement. The rear was all of a a millimeter.

Rotational, but it seems excessive.

A knowledgeable installer would be able to salvage the install. Pull the front driveshaft to eliminate any drag or drive.
