Currently trying to diagnose a few sounds I've been hearing..the first..a slapping or clacking kind of sound in 4wd..high and lo..and it wasnt horrible just noticeable..i can twist the front drive shaft by hand just a bit and almost replicate the noise
My second noise that im trying to narrow down is more of a mechanical click or scrap sound that sounds to be near the front end and seems to mimic the speed i am going until around 35mph when it is drowned out by wind and tire noise..
No lol i got a few videos to upload..still tearing things down seems like the rubber boot on the shaft at the transfer case is split as well..and theres play on that end.??
Take a look at the CV joints at the front and rear of your transfer case. You'll see grease splatter which would cause the joint to dry up and fail.
If there's no grease splatter grab a hold of each shaft and try to wiggle it. Look For play in the U joint and where it goes into the differentials.
I would not be driving the JK until you get this fixed.
S**t I should watch the vid first lol
Rotation is normal. There does seem to be a click present.... Hard to tell. Does there seem to be any play where the shaft goes into the differential? (Pinion bearing)
Wow... That thing is beat. Crown makes a rebuild kit for around $100. Doesn't look that easy though. 2nd option is a takeoff from another JK.
3rd a aftermarket driveshaft. Are you lifted ?
On your second noise. Try going down a hill and verly tapping the brakes and see if it stops. It could very well be a calapor or pad making some racket.
Oh shoot! Sorry yeah its lifted..3.5" maybe? Previous owner couldnt remember what he put on it, and I'm for sure thinking the rebuild kit..just kinda wondering now if the clacking sound in 4wd might be a worn out cardan joint?
Update - dropped the shaft today and magically lost that annoying noise! Definitely the cv joint at the transfer case this thing looks like crap! Got me a rebuild kit on the way!
