I am trying to decide if I want to install truetracs front and rear in my Jeep or if I want to just install an Aussie in the front or a Elocker in the rear.
I live in FL so I do not have to worry about needing to drive the Jeep in snow. It is a DD.
I stay awake at night debating on what I want in the back of my jeep. I wish you luck. LOL!!!!! I've been dancing around an Aussie in the rear for weeks, which isn't one of your option BTW. I'd rather have the locker in the rear where the weight of the jeep is on an incline than in the front. Just my 2 cents.
Interesting, going on the Aussie Locker site, it only shows one for the front. You might be right... Well that blows. the rear 44 in a JK must be different.
I don't think you can determine what's best for you in a poll. Guys who have lockers vastly outnumber those who have dual Trutracs. That doesn't mean lockers are inherently better. There are tradeoff's with both.
I'm one of the relatively few here who have F/R Trutracs. I wouldn't trade them for lockers, and you don't need snow to justify buying them.
I went with Truetracs F/R as well. Well designed, simple, no maintenance, engages automatically in all driving modes is what sold me. Very happy with them.
Q: You guys with F/R TruTrac. Did you replace your stock LSD with Trutrac?
I have LSD, and have wondered what I would do in front if I re gear. I assume that a Trutrac in front would compliment the LSD in back. No? Or should I plan to do both?
No rock climbing in my plans ever.... but plenty o'snow.
I have not made this upgrade yet, but I am planning to add the Truetrac in front and keep the LSD in rear. I have read that this is a good setup in low traction situations. I don't really do large rocks, but I do have a few steep and slippery/loose hills to climb...
I would upgrade your rear as well. Since your stock LSD will need to be serviced where as the Truetrac will not. You will either spend the money now and have a better LSD or later to service your stock LSD.
The reason someone would not want them is not so much rock crawling, but they are not so good with tires off the ground as there is no friction to allow torque transfer to the other wheel. This will cause the wheel in the air to spin, although I have heard you can lightly apply your brakes to solve this.
I am planning on doing this both front and rear, but have not decided if I want to regear or not.
One last thing, I know lots of people like to run synthetic, truetrac does not recommend running synthetic with truetracs. FAQ
My 13' came with Trac-Loc.. I replaced it with a TT. Within a year I had one in front.
The F/R combo is great. I've driven is absolutely terrible conditions and never once felt my Jeep couldn't handle it. No regrets whatsoever buying them.
I live in Florida and I run an Aussie locker in the front and the factory LSD in the rear. I run through alot of water and mud and it works great, however, I would like to run the Trutrac f/r combo to see if it is any better than what I have now.
soooooooo, what we are saying is. With the BDL engaging the brake, essentially that takes the "tire in the air" issue out of the equation. Essentially that tells me that the truetrac has all the benefits of a locker, with none of the disadvantages? I've personally never ran truetracs, but i'd love to hear from someone that has F/R truetracs with a newer JK that has the BDL, and provide input on how that works on rocks.
They did OK, but I have experienced first hand how crap the BLD is on it's own. I'm not impressed. I'm leaning towards truetracs if they will perform. I'd still like to hear first hand.
Agreed that the BLD is better with an LSD. I have the stock LSD and it gets me through everything I've tried but I don't go in the big rocks. Not looking to beat my girl up when I'm still making payments. LoL
I ran true trac's front and rear in my XJ for over 8 years rock crawling.
It was a standard transmission, and the rig had really good flex (800ish rti) and kept the rubber down 95% of the time. As such 95% of the time it was awesome.
Once 2 opposite wheels lacked traction it was a real handfull to operate the clutch brake and gas all at once to make the true-trac's work the way they can in such conditions, and I wished for lockers.
Had it been an auto, running the brake to make the TT's "lock" would have been much easier, and better yet had BLD been on board it would have been better yet again.
I cannot Say enough good things about the TT's... but for me and where I take my rig it was time for lockers.
the video above, the guy was never in danger of lifting 2wheels while crossed up, TT would dominate that type of trail, and, would still allow a tight turning radius unlike a locked rig.
This has been one of the most civil threads in memory considering it's about lockers. Lockers are great if you're in an environment that requires them. They will do things TT's can't, but dual TT's can do things lockers can't. On or off road twin Trutracs are formidable. Add BLD and good tires and you have a winner.
Off topic....Did you shoot 50's in the Corps. I shot with the FCSA way back when. Took second place in a national match once.
I am installing 2 inch lift to get my new tires put on Monday. My next upgrade will be the Aussie locker in the front. I do get some snow bit only about 2 or three days a years. I have read a lot of reviews and talked to Aussie Lockers themselves. I think it's gonna be perfect for what I need and I can't afford the nearly 1000 bucks for selectable lockers. I may be sorry later but it's a 280 dollar mistake verse 1000.
In extremely rare circumstance you don't want a TruTrac to lock during a steep decent as your vehicle will want to fish tail i.e. a wet Lions Back sandstone ridge in Moab.
With air or elockers you have complete control to turn it off or on. With TruTracs not so.
but in 98% of the time TruTracs are better than none.
I haven't decided yet on what I want to do. Some days I think I want dual truetracs. Other days I think I'll just go with an Aussie locker in the front. Then Aussie locker front Truetrac rear. Aussie front Detroit rear. Elocker rear open front.
Where I have driven my Jeep I have never been in a spot the BLD hasn't been able to get me out of. For this reason alone I have been thinking about a Truetrac rear to start with then later put an Aussie locker out front. Eventually I would like to install a switch that allows me to completely disengage traction control (as well as BLD). I think the Aussie truetrac combo would allow me to do this.
