Why do you think they are rather pricey? Tube doors run about the same price and offer less protection to passengers from things protruding into the passenger compartment. Sheets of HPE are not cheap, a 2'x4' sheet is around $100.00.
Check out the Savvy aluminum trail doors, cost more but seem a lot better fit and quality. Still cheaper than factory half doors. Of course a lot cheaper if you have a 2 dr. http://shop.savvyoffroad.com/category.sc?categoryId=28
It's optional. Actually, they're mandatory unless you want to remove your factory ones from your doors. Most, if not all door manufacturers provide hinges to attach the doors. Sucks that Savvy charges extra. They seem incomplete.
Yeah not the cheapest option, but they have pictures of them painted and mounted and they look real good IMO. Seem to fit body lines and shape well, plus aluminum is probably pretty light weight.
I agree they should be an inch shorter. I would go with the solid doors.
