I've been looking at the Rockhard 4X4 front bumper for my Rubicon.
Initially I liked the welded on skid plate covering the front sway bar.
Today I began to wonder about access to the sway bar disconnect motor, should I need to work on it.
Does the bumper have to come off to access the sway bar disconnect motor?
Does anyone have any pics from the back side, underneath, to show how much room there is to access the sway bar motor?
Our bumper is designed to cover and protect the motor, so yes, you will pull our bumper off should you ever need to replace your disco motor. The motor itself will never require a service unless it breaks. If you do ever need to get to it, simply remove the 8 nuts that hold our bumper on and remove it.
Thanks for the info. It's something else to keep in mind as I look at bumpers.
As an engineer I prefer things easy to work on, though I will admit I haven't read of a lot of sway bar motor failures.
There isn't an issue with the sway bar motor failing but that the disconnect linkage is not sealed as well as it could be. After time and if you dunk it enough it gets gunked up. Easy to pull (4 bolts and the linkage to the suspension to remove), and easy to disassemble to clean but would be tough to get to from behind a skid plate. My 09 is having issues at 103k and I plan to pull it this weekend to clean it up and rotate the motor before installing a skid plate.
It was the linkage I was thinking about when I asked about the motor.
I had read about it needing cleaned from time to time, depending on how you wheel.
I figured it wouldn't hurt to drop it out occasionally to inspect and clean as required.
I definitely will before mounting a bumper, I'm still leaning towards the Rockhard.
I like the sound of 1/4" steel.
