Electronic Throttle Control Sensor

Hi All

Something happened today and Im not embarrassed to say it scared the s*it out of me. Hoping someone can shed some light on this.

Hoping to describe this well but here goes....there is a viaduct (by the east hills Jeep dealer on Northern Blvd for those long islanders out there) where to merge onto it, its like getting on to the highway with a very short on ramp. If cars are congested and moving fast, you have to speed up enough to merge in. I did that and my accelerator for lack of a better way to term it, GOT STUCK! I took my foot completely off the gas pedal and the car lurched forward and would NOT stop accelerating. The ETC light flash and in my state I had enough sense to try the break pedal. Which still worked and I tapped it a few times thinking if I slammed on the breaks with my engine revving that high nothing good could come out of it. Since I was right there, immediately turned around and went to the east hills jeep dealer to ask WTH happened. I am a 40 something mom of two so of course I got the "are you sure your carpet wasn't holding the pedal down" (which really pisses me off but thats another post). It was not my mats. This was pretty scary and Im thankful that nothing really came of it. I made an appt for next week to check it out as they didnt seem to think this was a big deal stating "just don't floor it"

I read a few of the posts about the ETC sensor but what Im not seeing is why this would light up with what happened to me. Im going to search some more on line but thought Id bring this up to you guys hoping someone had some logical (and non condescending) answers.

I sincerely appreciate any responses!

If the pedal itself stuck, I don't think it was an issue with the ETC. Since it's literally just a position sensor for the pedal, the car doesn't move the pedal like old vacuum cruise systems worked. AFAIK there's not actually a physical linkage between the pedal and the throttle, it's all digital.
I hate to be that guy, but it definitely sounds like the pedal might have been sticking.

2016 wrangler...throttle stuck

i just had the same thing happen to me. first day i had the car, my throttle went wide open. i shut it off, restarted, throttle still wide open. turned it off and on about 8 times. after waiting about 10 minutes, i tried again. it was now okay except the throttle was slow to come down for a minute or so. took it to dealer and he said it was the floor mats. i asked him to show me how it could have happened and he got nasty with me.
did it ever happen to you again?

Yes it did! I brought the car in for service after it happened . They had it for two days. I scheduled the service a month in advance so I wouldn't get stuck with a crap car (yes car. they don't usually loan jeeps) Assured me they had fixed the problem. A week later when merging on to the hwy with a short on ramp the same thing happened. I used my toes to literally pop the pedal back from being stuck and the engine stopped revving. It's the scariest thing. Again I call the dealer and they said it couldn't be. My mat must have been in the way. So I just don't push the pedal to the floor anymore. If I have to merge on to the highway I wait for a good opportunity as opposed to speeding up really fast and squeezing in. I have another scheduled maintenance soon and will ask them to look at it again but will let them know I refuse to pay extra for any labor associated with it.

I know that road well having graduated from CW Post and living on the Island.

Did they check for codes? There could a code and no CEL. I don't think it is computer related though, most likely mechanical. Or the floor mat, try driving for a while w/o the mat and see what happens. Good luck.
