I noticed this on my 2013 today. I just picked up my Jeep from the dealer yesterday and never noticed a zip tie on the top of my coolant bottle until today. I took my Jeep in to the dealer to be checked out because my coolant level was at the minimum level for the fourth time.
Hope your Penstar is alright.
I Checked my neighbor's Jeep last night. He has a 2013 Black Unlimited. He does not have the Zip tie. I told him mine did. I looked at mine again, and like you guys said, it seems to be just there to keep it from moving around too much. Poor design if you ask me.
Bolts are expensive, zip ties are cheap and anybody who has upgraded the suspension bolts on their Jeep has seen that Chrysler doesn't like to spend money on bolts. Just be happy they didn't use zip ties to hold your track bar on.
2013 Wrangler Moab edition. I just figured out this but yes the coolant res has zip ties holding the top How does a quality company allow that? Pics attached. I am worried about it chafing the steering box. That is the pic attached from underneath.
Just to add, my '13 had a zip tie also. Dealer tech asked if I put it on, said no. He said he never seen one on there before. Not there anymore after new water pump and flush though.
The reason my reservoir is so close to the steering box is because the zip tie pulls it that way. :blackeye The service manager said yes they have zip ties on them. I think he read the forums. I am going to press him on the subject and see what happens. I should not have to go through the expense of retrofitting a newer reservoir with the rivet. The Jeep only has 3,900 miles on it. I checked my buddie's 2012 last night and no zip tie, but his is a bit loose. He has not had any problems with losing coolant and he does real 4 wheelin.

I guess I see how adding the zip tie to the reservoir could be temporary but I sure don't like being left with it because of the (possible?) chafing. :beerme: I may cut it off and add my own fix. I'm going off-roading this weekend and will try it. Thanks for the discussion folks.
out for a push pin clip when i took my 2013 JKUR in for a radiator flush about 3 months ago. The tech said he'd never seen a zip-tie on before and asked if I put it on there. I told him "no" and that my sister's 2013 JKUS has one too. I didn't like the way the zip-tie looked or held the tank so for $18 the dealer put in a 2014 tank and push pin clip.
Now... See the yellow cap? .. Drill a hole through it and buy some security zip ties and seal it shut. Label it "DO NOT FILL" ... if you ever find it cut and removed you'll know the dealer or whoever performs maintenance on your Jeep tampered with it.
It's the only effective way to control what antifreeze (OAT) is being poured into your tank - DO IT YOURSELF!
Smart... why? The first time a dealer touches it they will cut the zip tie off to remove the tank. The way its secured I can't see them reinstalling another zip tie.
$18.00 is cheap.. was that for the tank and labor?
Love this idea! I'm drilling mine this weekend and using a metal trucker tie to secure it. I've already had the dealer screw me over by putting orange antifreeze in, I caught it right away, but they had to flush it all. I wish I had known about the new coolant tank than - I would have had them put a 2014 one in.
LN... what's a metal trucker tie? I saw your post about what your dealer did.. I see it as a matter of time when someone screws up and if you don't know what they did or used you're basically SOL.
The dealer can blame you for the mishap and then you're talking huge cost to replace everything.. the security ties cost me $8.00 for 50 pack.
You can usually buy one off a trucker for a couple bucks, saves the hassle of ordering a large pack. In fact, spot the guy a $5 for 3 ties if you can, so you have some extras. This only works if the trucker doesn't have to keep tabs on his ID numbers, like an owner op, as some driver's have to log each tie used.
You can also pick a pack up at truck stops usually.
Since we are looking for tamper proof seals, you may want to get the ones with ID numbers so someone can't just swap it out, even though it would be hard to do so anyhow.
Found these on amazon, they don't have the ID marking I like, but they are self locking. If you go out and look for these otherwise, make sure you get self locking or you'll need to trigger gun to lock them.
And which one is that? And how does it relate to this thread?
