EVIC buttons balky and Key Out Weirdness

Almost no problems in just over 8,000 miles on my 2014 JKU Sahara but for these little niggles...curious if others have experienced these, and wondering if they have a common thread/cause because they all emanate from about the same place behind the steering wheel...

1) The EVIC buttons on the left side of steering wheel often need a second push (or even a third) to work. When toggling down through the options and/or checking the Coolant Temp, Trans Temp, Oil Pressure, etc, I need to push the buttons again before the display changes. The buttons on the right (Cruise Control) work every time. I'm wondering if this is a CANBUS reaction time thing or something mechanical with the switches themselves.

2) About once out of 20 times after I turn off the motor and remove the key, when I open the door the BING BING BING sound of 'key in ignition' goes off, stopping when I slide the key in and then remove it. Must be the interlock sticking, and I assume the dealer will put some sort of lube down there (graphite??)

3) It seems that the handy feature wherein if you signal a left turn by pressing down (but not locking) the turn signal stalk it doesn't consistently give me the three blinks it's supposed to...a feature I like and I thought at first it was just my timing or not pressing the stalk consistently...now I think it's coming and going.

I am indeed going to report all these to my dealer and take it in for a look..but the dealer is about 40 miles away thus I have to do some calling and planning to make it semi-convenient, so I'm first studying the problems to see if there's some reset or easy fix before committing a day to all that fun...

Your thoughts welcome.

Hi Commo,

Just a couple of comments to add to your observations. (2014 JKU Sport w/ connectivity - 9.5k mi).

1.) My EVIC behaves the EXACT same way. I don't use the cruise buttons on the right often enough to notice, but the left buttons definitely require multiple presses to scroll through the menu.

2.)Never noticed this issue.

3.) My lane change signal seems to consistently blink 3 times then cut off, so nothing out of the ordinary there. How many times does yours blink (or not) relative to the normal 3 blinks, if it does work?

I don't plan on taking mine to the dealer for any of the above reasons, but if your get any kind of response from yours upon informing the dealer I would be interested to hear.

I don't have EVIC, just skip and reset buttons on the left side, and the skip button works as both of you have described, like it doesn't work half the time you push it.

Tek, Jed,

Hmmm, interesting to hear of similar experiences.

When my lane change signal works it does the expected 3 blinks. When it doesn't work it just does the one blink as the stalk hits the stop. To get more blinks I have to push it all the way down to 'turn' position. Hope that's clear.

If I can organize it I will be getting it up to my dealer next week. I'll update.

Tnx.

My EVIC buttons don't always work on first touch. I've been wondering if that was normal. Keep us posted if the dealer does anything about it.

My 2013 does that... I think it's the switches because it didn't do it when new.

my biggest complaint is that the volume button will occasionally go up by 2 for every click, I cant handle my volume being an odd number unless it is a multiple of 5.

dont judge hahaha

There is some lag between the steering wheel buttons and the EVIC response but mine works consistently well. The EVIC is displaying information from the PCM/ECU which can a "busy little bee". Updating the EVIC is likely low priority as it should be.

My JK doesn't experience any of these symptoms. If you need to demonstrate to your dealer they are not normal try it on one of their JK's on the lot.

Excellent suggestion by spinlock...

I am glad that I am not the only one that needs evens.
It's OC P D, not as troubling or dangerous
My buttons had that trouble on my 2012 but when I had the radio repaired for losing time it was alleviated. They had to replace a chunk of the scrim. I thought the 13s had clock spring issues, could this new the same for you

I had the #1 issue and the dealer replaced the buttons. Worked ok at first and quickly went back to intermittent functionality! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
#2 nope
#3 nope

I just stopped playing with them... I've become obsessed with watching my oil pressure go from 80psi to 45psi when it hits 194-195 degrees. Sometimes the EVIC flicks through fine, other times I need to lean on the buttons.

Perhaps spinlock is correct... the blinkers get confused every so often so maybe its the same effect.
