I have found several articles on the subject but some of them are quite old, or they are on a Ram truck or Town and Country (!!!) forum, or they differ on the sources/methods/warnings.

Top priority is to not brick my system, but I am comfortable following instructions closely and have rooted and loaded custom ROMs on several phones and tablets over the years.

What I want is an up-to-date and definitive guide on how to:
  • Upgrade the firmware to current or recent build.
  • Upgrade the maps (Garmin) to a very recent version.
  • Add backup camera functionality for a camera I have yet to purchase and install.
Can the techies of JK Tech please direct me to a reputable source or thread?

Backup camera functionality can be achieved one of 3 ways. The first will require a dealer vehicle flash. The vehicle, not radio, is flashed with the appropriate code to activate the camera. Be prepared to spend up to $150 for the flash, depending on which dealer you go to. If you don't wish to do this, you can purchase a MyGig Lockpick or a Navtool to unlock the camera (and other) functionality of the radio. Lastly, Brandmotion sells camera kit that includes a module that is used to flash the vehicle.

For the firmware update, look here. If your radio software is at version 33.01.23 or higher, you can upgrade to 50.01.01. Download and burn the 50.01.01 update to CD. Either turn the vehicle's ignition to accessory or start it. The radio must stay powered on for the duration of the update, which can take about an hour. Insert the CD and follow the prompts.

For maps, there's no definitive guide because the steps vary depending on which version you want. Follow this thread.

I've done this twice now. It's cake. I downloaded an ISO about a year back and then again a couple of weeks ago after reading another post on this forum indicating that there was an update.

IIR there is a downloadable guide on the mygig site. Too lazy to check.
