Flush 4WD Lines/System

I'm currently working in Germany, but my wife and her 2014 JK are back home. She took it to the dealer today for an oil change and they told her that she needed to have her 4WD system and/or lines flushed because they were dirty and getting clogged. Now I'm getting this second hand so I don't know how accurate her statement to me was, but really?! She rarely even puts it in 4WD, other than every once in a while because 'you're supposed to'. Never been offroad in it, we use my '05 TJ for that.

Oh and they want to charge her $400 to do this flush or whatever. Any chance at all that this is legit? I told her to hold off while I asked the Forum :worthy: I admit, I rally don't know much about the JK's, I've been over here the whole time she's had it. TIA!

Having the fluids changed is a good idea. Going to a dealer for the work is not. I would not recommend going to a dealer for anything except required warranty service. If you can not do the work yourself find a trustworthy independent place to have the work done.

Not to say I'm not guilty of trying to push people into a 4wd service. But as a technician at a Chevy dealership we do see quite a bit worn diffs and transfer case issues way before 100k. Yea it's an expensive service for someone who's not mechanically inclined which is why I'd say if you can change your oil you can do these services. But I do recommend it every 40-50k. If you tow or wheel the Jeep it's a good thing to regularly service the transfer case and differentials. You can also probably do the rear diff now then the transfer case and front diff at a later time.

Oh and by the way axles and transfer case are not a complete sealed unit they have breather tubes and vents that when they heat up they vent out and then they cool down it will draw in and can draw in moisture over time. It's way they have the vents.

Some of these dealers really suck. I'm glad you told her to hold off. My wife would have laughed and left the place. You can swap out the fluid in both differentials and the transfer case very easily when you get home. At 46K miles I really doubt the service even needs to be done, although I did mine right around 45K in the Liberty.

This so called "flush" is a complete fraud. Have her get it out of there before something worse happens.

Stuff like this makes me ashamed to have made a living in the auto industry.

Changing brake fluid IS a smart thing to do every five years or so, but in most cases manufacturers don't recommend it. In the process dealer workshop practices and untrained techs can cause more problems than they solve. In the OP's situation he's better off taking it anywhere else but that place. Geez
