Front Axle U Joint

If you have a 2007 - 2010 and you break your front axle U joint you are screwed. Jeep discontinued them. The part number was 5004891 now you have to get a complete Axle Assembly.

I broke mine the other day and caught it before it did any major damage and I was happy. A simple change of a $30.00 U joint. NOT!
Now to find out I have to buy the whole Upgraded Axle Assembly.

NO YOU DO NOT. the dealerships tell you this to steal your money.
I went through this having a shop replace a joint. Plan was to have both replaced when I got the phone call. Even the shop said it sounded fishy and did some research. After a number of calls he did track down one u-joint with the old part number and replaced it. Now I have the other one showing play.
At a local jeep rally I bought 2 500891's but there is a Spicer revision. I have it somewhere and will post once I find.
If all else fails ... I have 1 you can buy.

Thanks for your help.
I did not go to the dealer. I checked with Nappa, Bennett and a few other places the U joint is not made any more. We had them send over 30 U joints that we tried to match up with no luck. We even checked with Spicer and they said they are discontinued.

I have all ready replaced the complete drivers side Axle.
If you find a replacement part number please post it up to help the next guy.

I went through the same ordeal. The dealership was called. Normal garage that actually sourced parts from NAPA. Nobody had the new info. I was In a panic until one was located.
After I had a chance to do my own research and found this .... If you look I posted too.

This is where I got the link for the link above

Just replaced mine with greasable units from NAPA. They are a common size and can be had at any auto parts store.

+1.

Bought 2 new U joints at NAPA for my 07 for about $70.

Took the shafts out of the front axle at home and had Pep Boyz press the old joints out and install new ones. $90 labor for the pair and got them back in an hour. No bad at all.

NP.... Now I need to swap one joint out. Also replace the seals. Ugh !!! I have a hand press at work if I ever get around to do this. @ TN that is a good idea and a option having PEPBOYS do it. Having 2nd thoughts installing a a oem style joint though. Maybe go with that Alloy joint posted on JKO
