So I installed the 2.5 RC BB about a month ago. works perfectly. the last couple days tho on my daily commute (which i do every day) i go over a rain ditch type thing going about 25mph and i hear a THUMP from the front. It never did that before. So, what do you think came loose? What would cause a thump in the front? I did not add bumpstops (probably not the problem) but i have a feeling something is loose since it didnt do that until a couple days ago.
If you are still running your factory shocks, it sounds like you are topping them out. On our 14 JK with 2.5" TF BB even with shock extensions we topped out our factory shock frequently on city street dips. Like you we did not install longer bump stops at first. Once we did the issue more less went away. It is now completely gone as we replace the factory shocks with high quality aftermarket ones with longer "up/down" travel.
Okay so i tightened everything (and somehow overtorqued a bolt and broke it.........) replaced it. (grade 8 my ass). anyway... its all good and still gets the thump. SO i think @Hivedr is right and its my shocks are bottoming out... I have noticed it does NOT thump when i go slower over said bumps.
!) what distance should it be from the bump stop to the metal on the frame?
2) are longer bumpstops required?
3) is it the end of the world if my shocks bottom out?
1. I added a 1" puck to the metal pad on the axle inside the spring. This worked to illuminate a fair amount of the issue. You might need more as I was also running shock extensions. With the now "longer" shock up travel length the 1" bump are perfect.
2. It is highly advisable.
3. Yes and No. You run a higher risk of damaging the shock and possibly the shock mounts. I did not change out my shocks until my wife hit some unseen dips at 35ish and almost lost control as the Jeep bounced around. Following her in my JKU with it's far more complete 2.5" lift and correct shocks I tore through the dips as though they were not there. Went back to the same spot
after the new shocks and it was a night and day difference.
Proper length shocks and correctly set dump stops just make for an overall safer handling Jeep. I would recommend both as your finances allow.
Part of me thinks that its not the shocks. I went over at a slowish speed and still heard the thunk, this time on the passenger side. There is no way that the shocks topped out at that speed. it almost sounds like its in the middle right of the jeep.
Did check and make sure they were tight. they will make a clunk sound. Also the sway bar brackets? Not sure if thats what its called. Its were the bushing on the bar are at. Had mine come loose a couple days ago while riding some trails.
You lifted? Going through a sound like this on my 15 Rubi with 3.5" lift . I checked everything underneath didn't find a thing, added 2 inch pucks up front and rock. Krawler bump stop extenders in back still had issue. I crawled under again and my driveshaft boot is all tore up. The guy that helped build it never put an exhaust spacer on not recommended upgrade to drive shaft. I just ordered Adams 1350 solid spicer shafts and am hoping this solves the issue.
I had this happen to me and it turned out to be the fender liners. A few small drill holes and some zip ties to hold them out of the way took care of the problem.
Here you go. I wouldn't necessarily to exactly the same as I did. These are bendy pieces of plastic so yours may be different. Also, mine have been trimmed to flat fenders.
I just pushed in various places with my finger to see where I should drill a hole. On the passenger side one, I used two zip ties connected together for the length.
Passenger
You can see where the bolt chewed up the plastic just to the left of the zip tie.
For me it was the sway bar hitting the frame (the circle looking thing) after i had 3.5 metalcloak lift installed. I trimmed that circle like an eights of an inch and haven't had an issue since. View attachment 2385121
