Unless you've changed the compression ratio through timing or after market parts, 87 octane is what the engine is engineered for. That being said, "name brand" fuels get you higher quality detergents and additives with lubricating properties. If at all possible, stay away from ethanol and low volume fuel stations.
Both the gasoline and oil have API standards, but the additives you get with higher end oils make the diference in the log run. If you change the oil and filter on a regular basis, you shouldn't have an issue. After break in, synthetic will certainly get you longer intervals between changes and has data indicating slightly better MPG and temperature removal.
