gear ratio.

hi. i've been lurking around the forum for pretty much ever. well time is finally right to get serious about buying a new jeep so my wife and i are meeting with the dealer this saturday and i need to ask you all a question if i may (pbly one of many to come).

i am listing the general requirmments i want for what will be my wife's daily driver and also the vehicle we will take on an occasional several state driving vacation.

question is what gear ratio to get?. standard is i think 321:1 but from what i have read on here i should be looking more towards a 373:1, especially since i plan on a 2' lift and 32's or 33's. i don't want to bog down on the interstate.

i should say i'll be getting an auto, 2dr, and no rock climbing just mild trails etc.

thank you for any advice.

I'd get 3:73's but if you can get them 4:10's would be better with 32's and 33's.

3.73 will be okay with the stock 32's which are really more like 31.3" --- it will be sluggish though.
4.10 gears will be much better.
If you really plan to go to 33's, get the 3.21 gears at first and regear to 4.56.

These numbers all change if you plan to pull a trailer...

Is the JK like the TJ in the fact that the carrier for the 3.21's would be smaller than the carrier for the 3.73's?

I know that the carrier for the 3.73's will fit up to 5.38 --- I'm assuming that the 3.21 coconut is the same...

this sounds pretty dumb but if i go with 411's how will interstate driving be effected?. it looks like 65/70mph would be pushing the rpm's quite a bit?.

I've got 32's and 4.56 gears in an autotrans; I was at 1900 rpm at 65mph with the 3.73's and 2200 rpm with the 4.56.
4.10's won't be out of line at all.
If you plan to go to 33's though, trust me and get the 4.56's. You'll bog. It's all about ratio...
3.21's are a complete mistake with the little tires; 3.73's are a mistake with a Sahara's 32's. All of the ratios are mistakes until you get to the 4.10's and 32's --- and that's just barely okay.

My new Sahara has 3.73 which seems great for my driving, not sure if all Saharas has this but if so you might want to look into a Sahara if so.

3.73's are fine with 32's on the highway and moderate trails.
But if you tow, drive on hilly backroads, hit level 4+ trails, or pull a trailer, 3.73's will let you down. Severely.
4.10 for these situations at the minimum.

well it sounds like 3.73's and 32's is the minimum unless i plan on 33's, towing, or anything more than moderate trails then 4.10,s or 4.56,s is the way to go.

i doubt i'll be doing any towing or anything more than very moderate trails. i'm more into looking at scenery than bouncing off of it.

i think i could learn alot by doing some test driving saturday. i like the idea, financially speaking, of a sahara so maybe i can figure out how to end up with 4.10's as well. i'm assumeing 4.56's are aftermarket but pbly not to pricey to chg over to.

thank you all for the help.

4.10's were an option on the Sahara in 2007 but not in 2008; only came on the Rubicon.
They might've gotten it back as an option.
Sometimes a dealer or indy Jeep shop will have some 4.10's laying around on the cheap from a Rubi-owner's gear swap. You can also find used sets for sale on these forums.

The spinnier ratios are the bee's knees for nasty hill descents and other crawl situations. Can really save your bacon.

Don't you get 4.10s if you order the towing package? I think also if you get the Sahara with the optional rear locker you get 4.10s.

Sahara and X come with 3.21 manual and 3.73 auto; towing package doesn't change anything. No 4.10 option at all but you can get LSD. No lockers except on Rubi.
They've dumbed-down the options. That's what cash starvation does to a company.

well that pretty much sums it up. dealer had me test drive a $36,000.00, 2008 sahara with 32's and 3.73 gears yesturday inorder to see how i liked the 3.73's. it drove well and would work fine but i think i would like 410's better.

so for now i'm looking for a new, or slightly used, rubicon. real decent dealership to work with and they've assured me they'll have noooo pblm finding one. he's even voluntered(sp) to put a 2' lift and 32's on it for me.

if anyone is interested the dealer quoted me 28,585 for a 2009 sahara, auto, freedoom top, 373's, tow group.

in any event thanks for the guidence. my wife said i actually looked like i new what i was talking about for once.
