I recently pulled the trigger and bought a 2015 JK Sport with an automatic transmission. I have been reading the forums at least daily since I made the purchase a couple of weeks ago. So far I love my jeep and and going to ask a newb question.
My parts came in so I will be getting an AEV 2.5" lift, winch, 35" tires, and rear carrier put on this week. The jeep currently is geared 3.21. I plan on trying to go off-road at least weekly (still looking for more places to go). After reading through the forums I see that I should eventually regear. What should I regear to? Are there any other upgrades I should look into when I regear or have some more funds?
Thank you!
You would be well served by picking your own gear based on your preferences. It is easy to do. Just look at the gear charts and pick the RPM you would like to cruise at 70 MPH and everything else falls into place.
It's one 4.10 (fuel economy), 4.56 (balance) 4.88 (performance) but look at the chart.
Drive it for a while and the other upgrades will become obvious.
Thank you. Yes, there is a lot of good info on that thread. Went through it once (plus reading new posts) now going back through to try and understand some of the technical info.
Personally, I would do the 4.88's. We recommend ANYTIME you are doing gears to do a master install kit. That way, you have all new seals and bearings. We run Yukon gears and have had great luck with them. We have free shipping on them to.
I have 2014 jku auto and re-geared to 4.56 to run 37's. Currently I'm still running 35's and at 70 mph I'm turning right at 28-2900. Eco mode no longer comes on unless going down a hill. I moved from 4.10's and that gearing was perfect for me on 35's. Hope that helps.
I agree with Jason. Personally I would err on the performance side, knowing I would slap on 37's on my 3.6L, so 4.88 would be an obvious choice for me. 4.56 could be used up to 37's but that is about it. You would need a new carrier for the front Dana 30 axle since you have 3.21 and I recommend re-gear ASAP. 3.21 will be dreadful with 35's. You will lose OD, your crawl ratio, MPG and power. I also recommend installing some inner c-gussets for the front C's at the same time.
When I regeared I also installed a front locker and diff armor. It is also a good idea to get a calibrator or tuner too to reprogram the ECU. I opted for the AEV Procal but Superchips makes the Flashcal which is the similar to the AEV and similarly priced.
i agree with everyone about re-gear quickly. I have 3.21 on my 2012 JKU with 33s and i have lost 6th gear and rarely use 5th. I used to have nittos but now i'm running 285/70R17 Goodyear Fierce Attitudes M/T and love them. They are heavy then the nittos and i'm going to go to 4.88s.
Thank you for the info. I will re-gear to either 4.56 or 4.88. I will also install gussets and upgrade ball joint. I am also looking into lockers (either front or format and back). I am still doing research. Thanks again.
That is another good idea. We recommend to do a locker and axle shafts when doing the gears. You have that stuff out anyway's and it would be the perfect time (and usually cheaper on labor)!
