I really like my 2017 JK Hard Rock wheels. Planning to lift Jeep and go to bigger tires in prep for our next trip to Moab. Probably doing a 3.5 lift and going to 35's.
If I keep my Hard Rock wheels, which I want to do, I think that forces me to use spacers. Spacers are out there and being used, any thoughts on them? A friend told me to be concerned about the spacer bolts backing out and not knowing about it. I rotate my tires every 7500 miles, so I would regularly inspect and tighten as needed. Are there any thoughts/recommendations on my path forward?
I did a 2.5" lift on my prior Jeep (2009 Sahara). since it was a sahara, could not go with wider tires due to drive train limitations. Went with 34" Goodriches which worked good. Kept factory wheels and did not need spacers. But this time, I have the drive train to support 35's. so I am going into uncharted territory.
Agreed. You can go to a 285/75/17 which will get you a 34" tire that will properly fit on a 7.5" wheel. At the 285 width you will need bolt on spacers to prevent rubbing. I have a set of 295/70/18's on my wife's 15 JKUR with 1.5" spacers and it just tucks the tread face inside the fender. On my 09 JKR I am running 275/70/17 on later model standard Rubi wheels. When I wear them out I intend to go up the 285/75/17. Anything past a 295 width tire should be on a wider rim.
Go aftermarket. There are some cheaper alloy aftermarket wheels that look good and have the correct backspacing so no need for spacers. I just got some Level 8 Trackers 15x8.5 for $99.00 each. Weigh less than my stock wheels too. If you aren't for that then I would reconsider what you want to do. 33s are cheaper and can fit on your stock wheels with spacers. I personally prefer aftermarket wheel to stock with spacers, but to each their own. Like mentioned above you might want to consider a 2.5" lift as well.
I was always under the impression that a narrower rim will hold the bead on better than a wider rim. I have to say I have never run 35x12.5-17 on a 7.5" wide rim but I kind of am in the camp that says it is fine. that said I have a set of 285/75-17 set of cooper st maxx mounted on stock rims and a set of toyo 35/12.5-17 mounted on aev rims and there is not a lot of height difference between the two sets. I think they both look good but that is just my opinion as like to change back and forth between them.
I am running a 3.5" aev so pretty tall but not too tall lol.

Toyo specs 285x75s at 7.5 - 9.5, so the stock rims are within specs. 12.50 specs start at 8.5. The AEVs are 8.5, I think. I run my 285x75 on 9s. I'd be a little antsy about 12.50s on 7.5s, but don't know anyone who runs that setup.
Thanks for the different ideas and approaches. All great stuff. Will follow-up on the Quadratec Hard Rock wheels. Was planning 3.5 lift, but will take a look at 2.5. It will get muddy and crawl in Moab (Easy to mid-Medium difficulty trails), but also is my primary vehicle. So needs to not be too bad on the road from a ride standpoint. not worried about noisy tires....turn the stereo and sub up will cover that that.
I like the hard rock wheels and haven't found a wheel I like better. When Quadratec's stock comes back I'm getting those with bigger tires so I don't have to deal with spacers. The wait is painful though.
for once in my life I am also a fan of the oem wheels on my HR, I wanted to keep them when I add my lift and go 35's but I want the proper offset.
So I was considering a few of quadratec's wheels, their HR, Moab and I forget the other wheel. I have been procrastinating to long (actually saving money for wheels/tires) and now that I am about to order wheels the HR wheels or one of quadratec's other options they all aren't being made. I was told this coming winter is the earliest the quadratec wheels will be produced again, with the key being earliest...
My oem tires are almost shot at 31k miles (my ears need a rest) thus in the next week or two I need to place a order
Personally not concerned about a 35 in the OEM 7.5in wheel, as stated with the big sidewall it's not a issue running those tires on the oem wheels. If the sidewall was very short like on a 24in wheel then yes, I would be leery... For me I want the proper offset and don't want to deal with spacers. Seems like for not much more money then spacers new wheels can be purchased.....
If it seems I've been flinging piss, I apologize to the OP and to those I've been 'discussing' with. I just feel I was called out and was trying to clarify my position. Didn't mean to derail the thread. I'll kindly bow out now.
When I went to Discount Tire a few months ago to purchase my MT ATZ 315s they told me that the "recommended" width was 8-11 but the "minimum" was 7.5 so they mounted them on my stock Hard Rock wheels no problem.
I too loved my Hard Rock wheels, so I bought the Quadratec version, sold my OEM's, and have 285 BFG KO2's on the new ones. There's a guy on eBay that sells the little red jeep decals. 👍
