I want to stay close or lower than 1100 for a winch.
I was looking at the zeon 12 or 10-s. My thought is to get the 12 and use it for a year, then putting a synthetic rope in it. Pros of the 12 is the extra pull and price. Cons is the added 30lbs more that the 10s up front, the need to upgrade, and possible cable snap.
4wd parts was pushing the new smittybuilt x20 gen2 12k synthetic which is $649. It's also very similar looking to the zeon.
Any thoughts or things you believe I should think about? When I think winch, I think Warn but maybe I'm putting too much faith into the name.
I have 3 things left until I get into the crap (prorock 44 and lockers)....winch, powertank, and PSC rear bumper (or armor)
My opinion; get the Zeon 10s and move on. start with the synthetic cable now. A year from now you might not have the $200 for synthetic cable. With a snatch block you can double your pulling power if you need to. That way you start light right off the bat.
I have the VR10000s. And that thing has pulled me out some real bad situations. The 10s will be good power.
I dunno but I was looking at your sig line. You seem to be building a nice jeep with quality parts. I would ask you why you would chose to be putting on Pro Rocks and then have a smittybilt instead of a warn. I owned a smitty for a short time and sold it. It just seemed cheaply made. I replaced it with a warn. I will be getting a warn for my 13 when the time comes. The Smitty might be just fine, but for a couple of hundred bucks more on a 50K jeep build it just doesn't make sense to me. A 10S makes more sense to me.
I totally agree..however..I have this weird thing in my head that I can't wheel unless I have one (same thing with the air down equipment). I just got a killer deal, for a new Warn, on Ebay. Zeon 12 for 750 shipped...so might swing me back to the 12 vs. 10s.
IMHO, you can never have 'too much' winch. (get stuck in a tough mud hole & you'll quickly discover the value of quality & 'bigger')
I have no problems with steel cable, as a matter of fact, I prefer it for it's durability..
I have been in/around the towing business for 35yrs & have never seen a properly used/maintained steel cable break (to all you cable haters, I'm not saying they can't break, I'm just saying I've never seen it happen personally).
Aside from some specialty Firefighting/EMS rigs, every professional tow/recovery rig I've ever seen has steel cable.
Because synth rope originated in the boating industry, I used to think it was just for hobbyists/weekenders who couldn't be bothered checking their gear (ie-cable) all the time (not that boaters don't check their gear, it's just cross-over stuff usually happens for some 'convenience' aspect).
Synth rope has come a long way since those days tho.. but it's still too over-priced for an old time steel cable guy like me..

I agree with this. I have the Warn 12K with steel cable sitting on the front bumper. I keep the cover on it full time. Only used it once, but comforting to have.
I doubt it..
After running cable, & seeing all those folks with shredded/knotted synth rope that needs much washing/care after every use/dunking, you won't change-you'll see...
Never seen any hardcore 4wheelers switch from cable to rope.. heard about it on websites, but never seen it myself...
I am swapping to synthetic. The steel cable had served me well. But, I watched one turn loose,a coupled weeks ago. Allot of energy there and I do not want to see it on my rig.
Thanks. I purchased the 12 last night since I got it for a very good price. Im honestly not sure if theres such a thing as too much winch. Snatch blocks ect. can be used but the difference between 10-12k lb could save me or others in a situation....now if I was going with a 17-20k lb winch then I would agree.
Another good point, is that not so much your Jeep, but whatever the weight is of the vehical you are recovering. If a huge pickup is stuck and asks you to help pull him out...
Ya...I would have went with the 10s if there was only a $150 difference but the was 750 vs 1150. Putting the triple rate coils to the test with the psc and zeon out front.
Installed the zeon 12, love the look and this thing is beefy. Only tough part was trying to aligning the fair lead mount, zeon plates, and winch. Tried to spool out and rewind but didn't have enough room so still have to do that. Any tips on this would be great.
