Hello everyone!
I have a 2012 4 door wrangler and the roof leaks. the water mainly comes in and drips off of the speaker bar. I have taken it to the dealership because it was under warranty and they said that the freedom tops were too tight. so we left them on until after the next rain and they still leaked after they "fixed" the problem. You can also hear the water moving around when you stop/go and turn. does anyone know what "drain" they guys at the dealership were talking about saying that "the drain was clogged"? It used to leak so much when we had a heavy rain that the passenger side floorboard used to fill up with water. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
If you can hear water sloshing around its more than likely inside the hardtop panels and one or the other may need to be replaced. it is not normal to get water inside the panels I would recommend taking it to the dealer when you hear the water sloshing around and have them remove the panel while you're there so that they can see there's water inside it and that it needs to be replaced.
If it under warranty you need to stay on top of it. Rest assured, they will not fix it once the warranty expires. Let them know you intend to contact an attorney if they don't stop the leak. Follow through with this.
Thank you guys! My warranty is up unfortunately and this has been happening since I've have had my jeep. When you say "in the panels" do you mean the freedom panels that I can remove or the whole pack part?! I'm sorry, I've never had a hard top before so I'm kind of clueless when it comes to this. Chargermop, my jeep is the same color as the one in your pic.
I was referring to the freedom panels more than likely they're taking water in. Since you're out of warranty take them off let them drain out and plug the hole.
I have a slight leak on the top right side of the passenger door. Above the head rest if you're inside the vehicle. It only seems to drip in when I take a right hand turn. Anyone had any similar problems? I was considering picking up some sugru which is a glue that you can mold before it hardens up to try and create a more flush seal but haven't seen anyone else try it so I'm not sure how well it work.
Do a search on the forums for Honda grease then go to your local Honda dealer pick some up apply it liberally to all the seals and you should be good to go.
Shin etsu grease I think its called. Works wonderful. Plus you can use it on a your weather stripping to keep it like new. One tube goes a long way. Amazon has it
Have you taken the freedom panels off and looked at the seals on the Hard Top and Freedom Panel for moisture. And do you see it mainly on the left or right. And just out of curiosity how my Clock Wise revolutions are the two top Screws tighten to. And what is your max for the left side and right side. Meaning, with the tops off, put the screws in and tightten till they stop. That is your Maximum. What are they at now.
I haven't checked after its rained but I will be sure to do that after the next rain. I haven't tightened the screws as tight as they can go yet but they're fairly tight. I read somewhere that over tightening them can result in cracking.
No, thats not what I said. Take a top off and put screw in the removed panel and count how many turns it takes before it stops. You dont have to force the screw in. Its real easy.
I'll tell you right now. If you take the Jeep to the Dealer, you're going to spend roughly $1500.00 and they might only replace a $80.00 Seal and $35.00 in a Foam Block Kit and about $30.00 in Butyl Putty Tape. Good Luck.
This may not help, but I seem to remember reading about a breather hole on the back of the freedom panels. This reminds me of it because they said you will get water in the panel through that hole if you over tighten the screws. I have never looked for it, but it was said when you over tighten the panel you expose the hole in such a way water can hey it it.
The breather hole idea makes sense to me sense the panels are hollow and you need to avoid pressure build up when the air in them gets hot.
Getting the water out should be as easy as locating the hole and standing the panel up in right direction.
To me it should like all your problems are from over tightening. I only put the screws in enough to make contact. Mainly to fill the holes, plenty of people just leave them out.
