Help me diagnose a steering problem... Please


New jeeper about 5 months into the best ride of my life. Took it off roading for the second time... minor stuff... mostly wanted to get it wet and plowed through some deep mud. Usually had two wheels in the thick of it and two on hard ground (hadn't rained in awhile). Was in 4X4 at the time.

Now as soon as I hit 45mph+ on the highway the steering wheel starts shaking. It's not noticable at lower speeds and the jeep stays in control but feels like it's right on the verge of losing it.

What on earth have I done to her?

Any thoughts would be appreciated so I don't look like a total noob if i have to take it in. I have a few ideas but i don't know how bad this could end up being.

Maybe you lost one of the weights off your wheel? Depending upon how deep you were in the mud, it's possible. I'd look for a mark on the inside and outside of the wheel where a weight used to be. That's something that would come and go depending upon your speed.

you may of warped a rim also.....that will cause one to shake

You could have bent something like a tie rod or knocked something loose like your drag link bolt. Get under the front end and make sure everything is tight and straight.

Or... you could have a big clump of mud stuck on the inside of the rim that's throwing the wheel balance off.

+1 on the mud. 80% of the time that's what it is. If it is a lost weight, I reccomend either liquid balance or DynaBeads (I have the beads in my Jeep and both motorcycles) GOOGLE Dynabeads......

You need to THOUROUGHLY pressure wash your rig when you are done wheeling, including laying under it and getting all those hard to hit areas. I tell all my wheeling friends to "GO GET YOUR OWN PRESSURE WASHER!". 5-10 bucks a pop at the coin op will pay for a washer in a hurry. I have a 2500 PSI, with 2 tips and soap feed. Worth it's weight in GOLD.
Another good thing to do is a "damage check" before running it home on the highway. Get used to what it is supposed to look like in top condition, then any little quirks will stick out. YOU ARE GONNA SCRAPE AND DING IT, get over that, and look for any hard damage, and fix or live with it based on if it is cosmetic or if it is performance effecting...
In my avatar pic, we just came down a SERIOUS hill that had big shale rocks on it, and one of them put a NASTY crease on my gas tank skid. Next day a removal, torch heating and proper hammering, cooling, and rattle canning and she looked almost like new.
