What really has me puzzled is what whine is only at idle?
Most whines get worse with increase in rpm's. This noise goes away with any pressure on the gas pedal, doesn't matter if its sitting in the driveway or going down the road.
Is there anyone that could show me where to check vacuum lines?
Took it to dealership and had a mechanic listen to it and he had no idea. Said he had never heard it before.
Eliminated anything on the belt. While it was making the noise I took the belt tensioner and released it so it was not spinning anything...noise still there and no change in pitch.
NO WHINING..................there, now are ya happy? If I could figure oit. How to post pics on this damn ipad, I would show a picture of a sign on a trail that says just that!
And have no clue what your problem may be without listening to it in person.
But good luck to you anyway
Thanks Don
Nobody likes a whiner. Especially when its my jeep whining!!
I did take a video and will try and post it here.
It sounds like a normal engine idle with a loud shop vac running in the background.
Vacuum leak, when Rpms go up the pressure changes so the whine stops, sometimes you can find it with water. When you wet the part that's leaking the water will stop the whine for a minute.
I was thinking water pump too. Then when I took all tension of the belt (no pulleys turning) and the whine continued (never even a change in pitch) I pretty much discounted all things driven by the belt.
It does sound like a vacuum leak. But so far I can't find one. And the Jeep mechanic didn't seem to be able to find one.
How many vacuum hoses are there on a 3.8??
Water pump or vacuum leak/leaks come to mind. The water pump can usually be ruled out by removing the fan belt and running the engine briefly. Vacuum leaks sometimes require smoke testing for them.
Hallellujah!!!
This has kept me awake at night!
Wish I could post the video of the engine howling. It sounded just like a shop vac (a noisey one) running in the back ground.
It was the oil filter.
Found it with my mechanics stethoscope.
I still didn't believe that it was just the filter, figured it was the oil pump and the noise was just resonating thru the filter.
But I changed the oil filter and no more noise!!!
Maybe a fluke but I will not be purchasing a Purolator oil filter ever again.
