Hitch recommendations

I have had 3 Grand Cherokees in the past, now I have my first Wrangler (2007 model). Their is a factory tow hook, welded dead center of the rear bumper. Will this need to be removed to allow hitch installation? If not, what brand best suits for this issue? I appreciate all responses, as I will have more questions later, Ref: auto trans, alternator upgrades, etc....thanks

Yes it must be removed. It is bolted in the same holes your receiver hitch will go. Not welded

Correction

I mistakenly stated that the hook is welded, when I should have said bolted. I like the idea if a centered recovery point, so I suppose my question is this.....can I still place a hitch leaving the hook where it is, or should I toss it and mount hooks on the outside of the frame? Thanks again...

Do you have any info regarding the auto trans? My preference would have been a manual, but I couldn't pass on this one. My Gr. Cherokees never had any issues, but this is a new toy for me

Mount your hitch and then get a D-Ring insert for it so you have rear centered recovery point when you need one and hitch when you need that.

I would put it on the outside. As far as a center recovery point goes, you can buy receiver shackles pretty cheap.

In my best Crocodile Dundee voice. "That is no receiver shackle, This is a receiver shackle"
