This weekend I helped my friend install his new Maximus-3 bumper hoop/winch mount and wanted to post up how simple and easy it actually was to do.
It was frigid temps - and we managed to fit his rig in the garage with the door closed - but the nice part is most of the unit itself can be pre-built inside where it's warmer
The kit itself is 4 pieces
(2) front brackets
(2) rear brackets
(1) mounting plate (these differ between the light only and the light/winch mount - but install the same)
line up the rear bracket, plate, and hoop holes and install the (8) hex bolts (the plate goes between the rear bracket and the hoop)
When it's all said and done - it should look like this
Now its time to go outside and tear the bumper off
Start by removing the plastic airdam (6 plastic attachment thingys - they were different styles between my 14 and my buddies 09) and the plastic spacer on top between the bumper and grille (those plastic phillips thingys are useless - pry those suckers out!) the winch plate covers most of that gap - we didn't reinstall his - the light only plate is skinnier and leaves a bigger gap so I have in reinstalled on mine
Then remove the (8) nuts (18mm) that hold the bumper to the frame
(sometimes its easier to get to them from the top)
Once you have all (8) nuts removed - carefully disconnect the wiring harness at the fog lights - and then using a pair of pliers carefully pull the christmas trees holding the wire harness to the bumper (I believe there are 4 of them)
now you can completely remove the bumper from the Jeep - one that's on the ground - remove the (4) bolts holding the metal 'bumper' to the plastic 'bumper' (see image)
You can now see the OE tow hooks - take the last pair of brackets that came with the Maximus-3
and install them over the bolts on the tow hooks
Next take your pre-assembled Maximus-3 and slide the rear brackets in to the frame and use the washer/bolt to loosely attach it to the frame (basically just to hold it while you put the bumper back on)
Bolt the metal inner bumper and the front plastic bumper back together and then lift and press the whole thing back on to the frame rail (you should be able to lift/rotate the Maximus-3 enough to get the bumper back on)
Hardest part of the install....getting this bolt tightened down...its a 7/32 hex bolt - had to take and cut down a hex key so that it fit under the tow hook - I'm going to suggest that perhaps Maximus look at actually adding a cut down 7/32 hex key to their kit for ease of install. (tried a hacksaw on one of my keys, ended up switching to some giant bolt cutters and then a grind wheel to
flatten out the end I cut.
Once the bumper is back in place and bolted in - put the wire harness christmas trees back in and reconnect the fog lights. Then you can tighten down the two bolts on the side of the frame and the bolt under the tow hooks to secure the entire Maximus-3 to the Jeeps frame.
