Infinity tweeter upgrade / replacement... done!

hey!

Just thought I'd share the tweeter upgrade done to my '09 JK....

Without real confirmation on whether they'd fit, I pulled the trigger on Infinity Reference 1031T tweeters (<$50 bucks at Amazon) to replace the dash tweeters.

It turns out they fit great!

The tweeter set includes 3 different mounting options / hardware, a pair of inline crossovers, and the pair of tweeters. To install in the stock JK tombstones on the dash, only the bare tweeter driver and crossovers are used.

Pulled the 'grilles' on both tombstones and removed stock tweeters....

Note replacement infinity tweeter, stock tweeter....., and bare tombstone grille....

After both stock tweeters were unplugged, the connector plugs were cut off, and the inline crossovers were connected to the cut and stripped stock wiring.

Tweeters were then connected to inline crossovers.

Tweeters were placed inside stock grille/cages and held with black electrical tape (This is just to keep them from moving during mounting of the grilles, as they are "loose" inside the cages.

Note new tweeter in grille cage....

Filled tombstones with polyfill (No acoustic purpose, just as filling to hold tweeters into the grille cages.

Snapped grill cages with tweeters in....and you are done!!!

I did the passenger side first, and did some A/B testing using the head units panning control....the difference is amazing....the new tweeters are much cleaner, and have significantly better high frequency extension. They are also considerably louder. (These are 2 ohm tweeters by the way!!)

proceeded to complete drivers side and went for a drive around the block to test the whole thing a little more....

My EQ pre-tweeter upgrade was: Bass +8, Mids +2, Treble +9.

This has now changed to Bass +9, Mids +3, Treble +5.....and need to do some more tweaking.

So there it is......high frequency sound is much cleaner / crisp than before, for under 50 bucks, Id say it is a very worthwhile upgrade.

Sounds nice new setting of equalizer, I'm actually more on bass person but there are musics that are better in clearer harmony.

Cool, thanks for the write up. I just got a new JKR and am not too impressed with the speaker quality. I was wondering if the tweeter pods were easy to open, or if I'd have to pull the dash apart...glad to see it is a simple swap!

Thanks for the write up. I've been debating about getting new tweeters myself. I wanted something that required no modifications....this might work. (I'll look for an adapter plug).

The original tweeters have an integrated bass blocking capacitor in them......The new infinity tweeters include sepparate crossovers (they are twice as big as the tweeters BTW) ...they just hid nicely behind the dash plastic side panels.

All in all I am very happy with the enhancement to the sound up front...I honestly found the sound of the stock midbasses to be acceptable and saw no need to replace them, this is what prompted me into the upgrade just to the tweeter part of the set.

I do, however (after front/rear comparisons) find the rear soundbar speakers significantly poorer sounding than the front set.....mmmm...upgrade that to pathetic in comparison.

I used the same tweeters but because the stocks have crossovers I did not use the new crossovers. Added new alpines up front and kicker upgrade in sound bar and a kicker sub and grill. Polyfilled everything. Left stock amp and upgraded to a 430RBZ and so far I am very happy.
Got it all on Amazon.

Hotrod!....so you swapped the capacitors from the stock tweeters onto the new tweeters???..because as far as I could determine, the signal on the wires to the tweeters is full range!!!...

I looked into the capacitors on the stock tweeters and noticed they are a 3.3 micro farad cap!!!..this means that on a 4 ohm speaker, they are acting as a 12,000 Hz hi pass!!!!....this explains why almost "no sound came out of them!!"....they are basically being filtered at a very high frequency and up from there, definitively not ideal for a speaker of this level of quality!

I did some testing to confirm this....I basically sent a music signal form an old radio I had lying around, to the terminals.....heard a very limited amount of very high end sound from the speaker....but as soon as I fed the signal bypassing the capacitor (or "direct") to the tweeter, the little guy just came alive!!! (Granted, a lot more midrange, not really higher frequency extension)....

So I'd say for those wanting a little more output from the dash tweeters, where swapping is not an option and when on an extremely limited budget (Like $2 tops), just drop by your local electronics store, and buy a pair of "6 or 7 Micro Farad electrolytic non-polarized crossover capacitors" and swap the stock ones on the tweeters for these (They go inline on the (+) lead) and you should extend the range of frequency these little guys play to now from about 4000 or 5000 hz and up, as opposed to the current 12,000 Hz and up...

If I remember correctly, the stock tweeters in the tombstones are powered by the HU, not the amp....even on the premium systems.

I know the sub is 2 ohms, I know the 6.5's are 2 ohms (at least on the premium system), I may have the check to see if the tweeters are 2 ohms as well.

I am now running JL audio C5 components. My tweeters are "Custom Mounted" behind the stock grills with a dab of hot glue. Hot glue is your friend in car audio at times for light jobs.

Hey!

I too thought the dash tweeters were 2 ohm, but they're not!!!....due to the fact we round up to consider the resistance of the wiring run, connections, etc, these are a typical 4 ohm load to the amp or head unit....

Hey!

Joon....the replacement Infinity tweeters include a crossover for each tweeter.....I've added a pic from the internet of these.....

To install you simply disconnect the stock tweeters.....cut off the plugs, re-strip the wires, and connect these stripped stock wires to these included with the infinity tweeters....they are pretty much pre-wired....when you get the set it will look straight forward...

20 years ago I played in this arena, so forgive me if my memory fails me...

As I recall, the 6db/octave frequency is based on the actual driver impedance which does not take in to account wire resistance, etc. So if the tweeter measures 3.4 ohms with a 3.3uf capacitor, the -3db frequency would be 14,171. Making the crossover point actually higher than that.

Calculate for any Value To use this calculator, enter the amount of capacitance you have available in the first box. Then enter the impedance of the speaker you will be using with this filter in the box below that. Finally, click the "Calculate It" button to see the frequency this filter will be -3 dB.

Capacitor = 3.3uF
Rh = 3.4Ohms
Answer = 14171.12Hertz

The calculator is available here: Car Audio - Speaker Crossover Chart and Capacitance vs. Frequency Calculator(High-pass)

So, those interested in bringing their factory tweeters to life should try something like a 10.0uf cap for a -3db of 4676 This means the crossover frequency is more like 5000hz. Those factory tweeters should be able to pull that off.

I think I'll give it a try in the next week or 2 and see how it comes out.

That is very interesting....

I should pull mine and test them.

Do you have the premium system?

If not, are your 6.5's 2 ohms or 4 ohm?

I ask because the HU powers the tweaters in the tombstone, even on the premium systems. I wonder if the HU is 2 ohm or 4 ohms? Or maybe the front speakers and tombstones are 4 ohm speakers that are being run in parallel to get a 2 ohm load?

Hey!

Pressure!....yes...you are correct...the 12k was just a direct number straight from a table for a 4ohm...your 3.2 ohm calculated is spot on....

I don't know if mine is the premium system, but its an 09 with an infinity sub in the back and a Sirius head unit (No Nav)....would that be 'premium'?

Thanks for the pic... I was curious as to what exactly it looked like and where that piece would fit. Ordered mine today and plan on doing it this weekend. Hopefully it goes as smooth as yours!

Any idea which is + and -?

I just got home from work, but I suspect you figured it out. I would have looked at the factory tweeter and noted that the capacitor would be in-line on the + lead. Traced back to the plug would tell you which was positive.

Yup, that matches what I did. Capacitor is on the Gray & Red line and Gray and Blue line. Pics later.

Here ya go.


Foreground front left tweeter, right tweeter in the back. Note the odd wire colors on from my 2014 JKURX. The capacitors are both facing you in the picture so I did get the wires right. I found that five wraps of black electrical tape hold the tweeter in the stock grill just fine. I did use the crossover wires and it sounds great.

I finally got around to installing the Infinity tweeters yesterday.... I totally agree with you, the sound is much cleaner and crisp and well worth it.

I see you didn't get a chance to perform Pressurized tweeter mod. I was hoping someone would have a before and after comparison with the Infinity Reference 1031T tweeter replacements. I wonder if anyone has done this yet?

It would be helpful to know if there's an improvement using the Infinity Reference 1031T tweeters over the modified factory Alpines.
