Jack Lift Height Necessary for Coil Spacer Install or Spring Swap?

Quick question for those who have added coil spacers or swapped springs. How much lift height do you need from the jack? I have a smaller service jack that has about 9" of lift - is that enough? Will the jack that came in the Jeep work?

Thanks for your assistance - I want to make sure I've got everything I need before starting the job.

Misread the OP.

Yeah, I figured that's what I'd have to do. I have a 8 or 10 inch piece of 6x6 that I can use between the jack and the diff. I've been watching a few spring swap videos tonight and in one of them they used a chuck of wood under the diff to get the necessary height.

... and yes, probably time to look into an upgrade. :thumb:

Be real careful if you use the stock jack. I had 2 of them to install my 1.75 front spacers. I had no issues lowering the axle with one but the other one under the frame decided to shift mid way through the process. They are strong but not real stable.

I would recommend upgrading your jack and getting jack stands. It will make it easier and faster and most important safer.

We all cut corners thinking it will be fine just this one time or thinking its too much to spend for something I will rarely use. How much is you life worth? how much is your arm or leg worth? I have been pinned under a car for a couple hours till someone came home and I still do stupid things. Please be smarter than me.

^^^^^^THIS!!!!! From experience, I would recommend to use at least 10 ton jack stands to get enough height with a large enough base to do the job safely; and use like a 5 ton service jack also, just for the added stability.
Regards to all.

I went with 2 ton HF jack with a 23" lift height and 6 ton HF stands with a 23" max height to install MetalCloak 2.5" coils. No way 9" would've work, I had the jack stands close to 20" to get the axle to droop enough to get the coils in. Probably going to pick up 12 ton stands so I don't have to extend the 6 ton stands so high.

Thanks all for the replies, and I agree about doing the job correctly AND safely. I didn't mention it in my original post but I do have jack stands and plan to use them. I just wasn't sure if my jack could lift the jeep high enough to get the jack stands under the frame.
